Albuquerque Marriott Review

This 17-story, upscale, uptown property draws a mix of business and leisure travelers; it's close to three shopping malls and not too far from Nob Hill. Kachina dolls, Native American pottery, and other regional artworks decorate the elegant public areas. The rooms are traditional American, with walk-in closets, armoires, and crystal lamps, but have Southwestern touches. Rooms on all but the first few floors enjoy staggering views, either of Sandias to the east or the vast mesas to the west. Cielo Sandia specializes in steaks and contemporary New Mexican fare.

The most important thing to know about the Marriott Albuquerque is that the hotel is currently under renovations. From what we could tell, the renovations seem to be focused on removing the typical-for-a-Marriott brass and crystal and adding in warmer, more tasteful elements more in keeping with the chains new look.
The room renovations seem to be successful; they maximized the small size of the room and did a good job with lighting (we liked the lights above the bed), and space planning. They seemed to be trying for a modern home design instead of institutional hotel setting. We found the bed comfortable and attractive, the furniture modern and tasteful and felt that the furnishings worked well together.
We wished the room had a safe (odd that business-focused Marriott would renovate a hotel and not include them in the rooms) and found the lack of bathrobes disappointing. Although we dont really use minibars very much, we wish we had the option in this room maybe Marriotts new renovations are focused on removing items such as minibars?
The area that definitely needs a makeover is the sad and dated bar/lobby area with its dated oak chairs and tables and teal green leather sofas (!) that are uncomfortable to sit on and to look at.
We were impressed by the hotels forthright focus on the renovation there are signs everywhere and the staff wears Operation Renovation shirts that make it clear what is happening in the building. It seemed like a nice touch, even though the staff we talked with werent sure when the renovation would be complete.
Overall, this is a good hotel, and probably the nicest place to stay in Albuquerque, at least until the Sheraton down the street is renovated (assuming that ever happens). Wed recommend this hotel and suggest that you shop around for a bargain: we found a good rate on the Marriott.com Web site.
