Glen Echo
Glen Echo, now a charming village of Victorian houses, was founded in 1891 by Edwin and Edward Baltzley, inventors of a type of mechanical eggbeater. The brothers fell under the spell of the Chautauqua movement, an organization that ran what can best be described as an educational summer camp with prominent lecturers and performers. To further their dream, the brothers sold land and houses, but the Glen Echo Chautauqua lasted only one season.
