Why We Like It

Comfortable, spacious accommodations make this a real home away from home, but a home inside the relaxing splendor of a rainforest with an active volcano nearby.

Fodor's Expert Review

A collection of lovely vacation rental cottages, these accommodations range from a simple cottage in the rain forest to the stunning cedar-paneled Nohea with sitting room. Most units can accommodate up to four people comfortably, and all come equipped with full kitchens stocked with organic cereals, tea, hot chocolate, coffee, and granola. Enjoy views of the ohia forests from expansive picture windows, or stargaze on a clear evening from covered Lanai.

Tip Prices drop by $15 to $20 per night when staying three or more nights, so these accommodations are quite affordable if you’re planning to stay a little while.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

You will need a rental car to get around the Volcano area and the island.

Restaurants

A great spot for grab and go breakfast or lunch is Eagles Lighthouse Café (3-minute drive) for both standard lighter fare and more Hawaiian leaning dishes like a fried rice breakfast bowl. Keep things a little lighter at Café Ono (4-mile drive) where you can find health conscious fare in an old Hawaiian garden estate.

Bars

Go to Lava Lounge at the Kilauea Military Camp (10-min drive) for no nonsense cocktails at great prices, as well as occasional live music. For a little more upbeat, but still laid back night life with live music, mostly Kona Brewery beers on tap and a standard bar full of liquor, Hilo Town Tavern (43-minute drive) is your best bet for rubbing elbows with locals at this semi-dive bar that has live music, sports on a few screens, and a couple of pool tables.
