Reeds Bay Hotel

175 Banyan Drive, Hilo, HI 96720

Why We Like It

A budget hotel with great views is hard to find, but Reeds Bay manages to give guests a little something extra with their stay thanks to Hilo Bay.

Fodor's Expert Review

Simple accommodations give budget travelers a nice option, particularly families and larger groups, for a sleeping and gathering spot. It’s a no-frills sort of place, but affordable and includes a pool. It’s also walking distance to some of the east side’s most endearing spots, so visitors could have the option of being carless for a day. Kitchenettes in the room allow guests to cook their own meals to save even more.

Room

These are very simple rooms that don’t fuss with décor, just furniture and bedding. All rooms include TVs, kitchenettes with refrigerators and microwaves and some have lanais with bay views.

Tip Go ahead a book a bay view room – this isn’t the fanciest of hotels, and the extra view really helps.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are small and simple, with showers and a separate water closet.

Lobby

The lobby is straightforward and efficient, with lanai furniture to rest during check in.

You Should Know The free Wi-Fi can often be spotty, so if you need to use the internet for an extended period of time, consider seeking out a coffee shop.

Pool

The pool is simple, with a few chairs, but is a great place to relax and watch the cruise ships and sailboats in the bay.

Dining

There is no on-site restaurant, but the rooms include kitchenettes that are stocked with dishes and small appliances.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

You will need a car to get around Hilo and the island, though this hotel is easily accessible with a ride share or cab from the airport.

Restaurants

Ken’s House of Pancakes (8-minute walk) is a tourist and local favorite, with great breakfast and their famous Sumo plates (that come complete with a gong bang) that are not for the faint of heart. If you’re looking for fast food without having to drive through a place you have back home, stop by Verna’s Drive Inn (8-minute drive) for Hawaiian on your way out for the day.

Bars

With mostly Kona Brewery beers on tap and a standard bar full of liquor, Hilo Town Tavern (7 minute-drive) is your best bet for rubbing elbows with locals at this semi-dive bar that has live music, sports on a few screens, and a couple of pool tables. Coqui’s Hideaway (11-minute walk) has a fun sports bar that hosts live music, free pupus during happy hour, and a game room.
