Sled-Dog Racing

Yukon Quest International Sled-Dog Race. Because the terrain is rougher and there are fewer checkpoints, most dog mushers think this 1,000-mile race between Whitehorse and Fairbanks provides more intense competition than the higher-profile Iditarod. The Yukon Quest takes place in February; the starting line alternates yearly between the two cities. Up to 50 mushers participate, with most finishing in nine to 14 days. Whitehorse, YT. 867/668–4711. www.yukonquest.com.
