The Marais is one of those rare Parisian neighborhoods that combines excellent museums, boutiques, dining, and nightlife in a postcard-perfect historic setting. It's also home to the city's largest Jewish and gay communities. Character comes at a price, though: minuscule hotel rooms and labyrinth streets with narrow sidewalks can give the area a cramped feel. Relief can be found in the eternally elegant place des Vosges to the east, or on the pedestrian streets surrounding the super-contemporary Centre Pompidou to the west.
