What started life as a small group of clothing stalls in the 1970s has since grown into one of London's biggest tourist attractions. Centered on the Grand Union Canal, this isn't actually a single market, but a vast honeycomb of them that sell just about everything, but mostly crafts, clothing (vintage, ethnic, and young designer), and antiques. Here, especially on weekends, the crowds are dense, young, and relentless. Camden Lock Market specializes in crafts, and Camden Stables Market is popular with Goth kids and aspiring rock stars. In early 2008, a part of Camden Canal Market burned down. There were no casualties, but around 80 smaller stalls were destroyed, as was the famous Hawley Arms pub—a Camden landmark and former hangout for celebrities such as Amy Winehouse and Kate Moss. However, the Lock and Stables Markets were untouched and the Hawley Arms has reopened. Details of exactly what else will be rebuilt were not available at this writing—check the Web site for updates.
