86–88 Clerkenwell Rd., London, EC1M 5RJ, England
Nestled on the edge of a cobbled square in one of London’s quieter neighborhoods, the Zetter brings boutique chic to Clerkenwell with its combination of lively colors, retro furniture, and chichi modern design wrapped in a former Victorian warehouse. In an area known for its high-end design studios, the hotel fits right in, its 59 rooms each individually styled to be able to offer something different on every stay. A short taxi ride from the buzzing neighbourhood of Shoreditch to the east, and the West End in the other direction, this is the spot for those who want the choice of both trendy nightlife and traditional attractions within easy reach, while it will also appeal to the tech crowd thanks to its close vicinity to the Silicon Roundabout.
Getting around from Clerkenwell is convenient but you can make it more fun by borrowing one of the complimentary Brompton bikes from the hotel.
Individually designed rooms overlap with a feint mid-century-meets-Seventies kitsch theme running throughout. Rooms range from small doubles to the deluxe rooftop experience that comes with its own private terrace and views from the bed across the London skyline.
There’s no swinging of cats in the Zetter Hotel’s bathrooms because there just isn’t the room, however, despite their compact size they are more than adequate. REN bathroom products await in the stylishly minimal rooms, which come with walk-in Raindance showers and bath tubs.
Check-in at the Zetter Hotel is a smooth process not to be disrupted by any sociable shenanigans in the modest, ever so slightly corporate looking lobby. The lifts wait next to the concierge desk ready to whisk guests away to their rooms.
The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, sticking to contemporary European cuisine with a focus on British produce. And if you’re in the mood to let loose, make the weekend brunch a boozy affair with bottomless prosecco and Bloody Mary to accompany your grilled kippers.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The restaurant closes for service after lunch between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. but room service is available 24 hours.
A thoroughly modern space, the Club Zetter functions as a shared workspace during the day, seamlessly accommodating a drinking element in the evening when the bar’s specialty wines replace laptops on tables.
Happy hour runs 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day, which means all the more reason to sample the Zetter’s wine-based cocktails.
A popular hotel for guests involved in the area’s thriving tech industries, the Zetter Hotel is well connected through Farringdon Station. The simplest way to travel east to Shoreditch or west to Central London is on one of the many regular buses that run the long straight road connecting the two, however, if you prefer black cabs you’ll find an endless stream outside the hotel.
Just over the road, chef Fergus Henderson’s St John (4-minute walk) serves the best in nose-to-tail fine dining. Alternatively, the much fawned over Modern Pantry (1-minute walk) is always a winner with its commitment to elevating everyday ingredients.
Sample one of a hundred beers from the Dovetail (2-minute walk), a charming Belgian beer bar a hop and a skip away, or head for the hotel’s neighboring sister venue the Zetter Townhouse (1-minute walk) and its sultry cocktail bar.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Cool and contemporary, the Zetter Hotel offers something for everyone. Ideally located for a corporate/tech crowd as much as for tourists, the hotel blends stylish design with everything else you might need from a modern hotel, whether that’s free use of a Brompton for leisure or a quiet, collaborative work space to take meetings.
