Whale-Watching

During the winter months (January through April), Salt Cay is a center for whale-watching. Approximately 2,500 humpback whales pass close to shore as they migrate through the Silver and Mouchoir Banks for mating and birthing. Today it is thought that many are staying in the waters off Salt Cay instead of moving on. Whale-watching operators have become familiar with their patterns and habits, making up-close observation almost a sure thing.

Crystal Seas Adventures. Proprietor Tim Dunn, who is an actual descendent of the original owners of Salt Cay's historic White House, knows the waters around Grand Turk and Salt Cay as well as anybody. His company offers a variety of excursions: swimming with stingrays at Gibbs Cay, excursions to secluded cays, snorkel trips, plus whale-watching from January through March. Crystal Seas Adventures will cater to Salt Cay visitors as well. Grand Turk Cruise Terminal, Grand Turk, TKCA 1ZZ. 649/243–9843; www.crystalseasadventures.com.
