Bayaleau Point Cottages

$ | Bay à L’Eau, Grenada

In a laid-back environment on a quiet hillside estate on the easternmost point of Windward Bay, four colorful gingerbread cottages are within earshot of one another but partially hidden by trees and other foliage. Each cottage has a fully equipped kitchen and sleeps up to four—one has a "guest" annex that would be perfect for a couple of teenagers. Meals are served by reservation or prearrangement—if you want your freshly caught fish grilled, for example. The cottages were lovingly built, one by one, by owner Dave Goldhill, an expat American who opened Bayaleau (bee-ah-loo) in 1992. Goldhill has a 28-foot boat called Mostly Harmless, also built on the premises, which he uses to take guests on snorkeling trips to the Tobago Cays and half- or full-day excursions throughout the Grenadines. Take a hike, borrow an ocean kayak, watch the birds, or, for something completely different, enjoy a donkey trek—from three hours to five days.

Pros

  • Ideal for small groups or families (up to 16 people)
  • Swinging in your hammock is an "active" sport
  • Beautiful Grenadines view

Cons

  • Rustic environs
  • Way off the beaten path
  • Rental car advised

Carriacou Grand View Hotel

$ | Belair Rd., Beausejour, Grenada

Island visitors and local business people alike relish the lovely view, particularly at sunset, from this perch high above Hillsborough Harbour. Though the building is four stories high, its hillside location provides entrances at three levels, making stair-climbing a nonissue even if your room is on the top floor. Guest rooms are pleasant and comfortably furnished; suites have added sitting rooms (large enough for a roll-away bed) and full kitchens. Most bathrooms have only showers. The swimming pool is small, but this is the only hotel on Carriacou with a pool. The beach and the town are a 15-minute walk downhill (and then back up!).

Pros

  • Truly a grand view, even from the swimming pool
  • Popular restaurant with late-night piano bar
  • One child under 12 stays free with parents

Cons

  • Accommodations are basic
  • It's a hot walk uphill from town and the beach
  • Some rooms have no air-conditioning
