Boat and Ferry Travel

There is no boat service from Hanoi to Haiphong, but ferries, high-speed boats, and hydrofoils link many of the coastal destinations. However, with roads much improved these days, most travelers find it more convenient to go overland when possible.

Unless you're a guest of the Vietnamese military, the only way on and off Cat Ba Island is by boat or hydrofoil. There is a ferry service from Halong City to Cat Ba, but the more common route is from Haiphong.
