Shikoku Mura Review
In the Yashima district east of central Takamatsu, this open-air museum consists of traditional houses that have been relocated from around Shikoku. The park does a fabulous job of illustrating how life on Shikoku has changed throughout the centuries. Enter the park by crossing a rickety vine bridge or play it safe and use the sidewalk detour. The route through the park is clearly marked, and English information boards are thoughtful and thorough. Highlights of the park include a village Kabuki theater relocated from Shodo-shima island, thatched-roof farmhouses brought from mountain villages, fishermen' huts, sugarcane-pressing sheds, and lighthouse keepers' residences.
On a hill above the sugarcane-pressing shed is Shikoku Mura Gallery, a Tadao Ando–designed concrete-and-glass art gallery that looks like it was relocated to the park from central Tokyo. Inside the gallery are works by Renoir, Picasso, and Leonard Foujita, but the highlight of the gallery is the outdoor water garden. Access is by Kotoden or JR trains: take the Kotoden Shido Line 20 minutes to Kotoden-Yashima Station and walk 5 minutes to the park, or take the JR Kotoku Line 15 minutes to Yashima Station and walk 10 minutes to the park. Going by car, take Route 11 toward Tokushima and turn left when you see a Uniqlo clothing store on your right.
