The region would not have such allure if it weren't for its exclusive seaside getaways and colonial manor houses, as well as its more rustic inland farms and national-park log cabins. Many of the better establishments are set on little islands of well-tended gardens within wild forests. Breakfast is included in most lodgings' rates, and if your guesthouse serves dinner, eating the evening meal in
situ often has a welcome intimacy after a day of exploring. On the flip side, some cottages are self-catering (with cooking facilities), giving you the chance to pick up some local delicacies and make yourself a feast.
Note that the prices listed are for high season, generally October–April. In some cases these prices are significantly higher than during low season, and they may go up higher still for the busiest period—mid-December to mid-January.
