This list is limited at best. It pretty much leaves out amazing day trips in non-metropolitan locations such as Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Upstate New York, Louisiana, Tennessee, etc. Talk about focusing on the obvious.

Ana Maria Island is west of Bradenton which is south of Tampa down I75 about 40 miles. The causeway spoken of is down 64 which is the first exit off I75 after crossing the Manatee river. Go west to Ana Maria Island. Be aware that parking is restricted on the island Non residents must park in metered lots. Parking along the streets is prohibited and may result in being towed.

If only it were so....Athens is SEVENTY miles from Atlanta (urban sprawl isn't there YET)
