Richard Branson, the mogul behind an airline, hotel chain, and nearly every facet of travel, decided to enter the cruise space—and nothing is half-baked with the Virgin name attached. There are more than 20 eclectic eateries onboard (all of which are included); rooms feature hammock seating on the balconies; entertainment includes a show hosted by a sex therapist; ports include the Beach Club at Bimini, a private experience operated by Virgin Voyages; and cruisers are referred to as “sailors.” What won’t you find? Kids. The entire Virgin cruise experience is 18-plus. Read More

The cruise line’s very first ship, Scarlet Lady, debuted in early 2020. After a hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it resumed service in summer 2021. A custom-built cruise terminal in Miami serves as the ship’s dazzling homebase. Branson has since added Valiant Lady based in Barcelona and sailing the Med, with Resilient Lady setting sail from Greece in 2023, and Brilliant Lady—Virgin’s fourth ship—announced, but not yet sailing.

Is This Line Right for You?

Choose this Line If
Don’t Choose this Line If
You want a kid-free cruise that’s sexy not sleepy. This isn’t your parents’ cruise line.
You’re a fitness fanatic. Indoor and outdoor gyms feature all the latest equipment; classes, like sunrise yoga, are included.
You’re looking for nontraditional entertainment that often elicits audience interaction.
You’re looking to spend all day in the pool. One unfortunate overlooked aspect of each ship has been a single, small pool.
You’re looking for a traditional cruise experience; staff are attentive, but service is casual and more conversational than on other lines.
You’re extremely introverted. People sailing Virgin want to see and be seen—meaning be prepared to mingle.

What to Expect on Board

Food

These ships have a ton of options (more than 20 dining venues alone) when it comes to noshing and imbibing, so there is likely to be a thrilling sip or bite for each person in your travel party.

Beyond trendy concepts like a test kitchen or family-style Korean barbecue at Gunbae, the biggest headline about the cuisine onboard is that it’s included in the cruise fare—yes, all of it.

Virgin has eschewed traditional cruising concepts like a sprawling buffet or grand main dining room. In their place, Virgin’s “sailors” can find the mostly plant-based Razzle Dazzle restaurant, elevated Mexican at Pink Agave, steak and seafood at Wake, or grab-and-go at the Galley food market, just to name a few.

There is a 24/7 diner onboard for late-night cravings, as well as an ice cream shop and coffee house. The idea of room service has been replaced by Ship Eats, a set menu that is operated by the app and can be delivered anywhere onboard for a $5 surcharge.

Entertainment

Prepare for plenty of acrobatics, and be wary if you’re prudish.

Virgin has pushed the boundaries of onboard entertainment in keeping with the company’s efforts to transcend a traditional cruise experience. No one thing is quite as it appears, including a late-night cabaret with a dose of sex therapy; a retelling of “Romeo and Juliet” with circus performers; and a dance party-slash-stage performance that recalls Old Hollywood while also achieving absurdism. The ships make the most of their adult audience.

Entertainment venues onboard also do double duty as nightclubs or theaters. Expect plenty of live music, including a space for karaoke parties and a record store called Virgin Vinyl. There is a casino and arcade, but also pop-up performances around the ship that aim to immerse those onboard in Virgin’s exciting and eclectic atmosphere. Once per cruise, a theme party called Scarlet Night aims to paint the ship red with fanfare and a funky bar crawl like you’ve never done before.

Fitness & Recreation

Fitness and wellness are concepts that were heavily considered when developing Virgin Voyages, and guests will notice ample space—both indoors and under the open sky—to take advantage of both.

Complimentary classes include sunrise yoga, spin class, or an HIIT workout; you can even book a guided hike in port. Throw a one-two punch at the outdoor boxing arena, or simply unwind at The Perch, an al fresco wellness space.

Treat yourself to a seaweed wrap at the Redemption Spa (spa treatments are an additional cost). A Medi-spa, nail salon, beauty parlor, and barbershop round out a suite of self-care. Guests will find products by JLo Beauty in the Scarlet Lady spa and salon; Jennifer Lopez is the cruise line’s Chief Lifestyle and Entertainment Officer. Being Virgin, the Lady ships also feature Squid Ink, a tattoo parlor; a giant outdoor daybed; and pressed juices made to order at Gym & Tonic.

Key cruising tips

Download the app and book in advance. These are a tech-savvy bunch; don’t miss out on a reservation because you waited until you were onboard.
If you are in the Virgin Voyages app and wearing your ID band, just shake your phone three times and someone on the ship will bring you Champagne.
Bar Tab is the Virgin drinks package, but it must be purchased and prepaid before boarding; most nonalcoholic beverages are complimentary.
Bring your own bottle; filtered water is available throughout the ship and bottled water is not sold onboard.
Looking to eliminate tan lines? There is a designated topless sunbathing section out on deck.

Your shipmates

A Virgin Voyages cruise isn’t just for the 20-somethings but the young spirited, inviting anyone who is open to a good time to set sail. Marketed to individuals who might have never cruised before, the passenger mix is an eclectic one spanning coasts and generations, friend groups, couples, and single people. Inclusion is a focus, so expect solid representation from the LGBTQIA+ community.

Dress code

There is no dress code onboard a Virgin Voyages’ ship, leaving what you wear on vacation completely up to you. A daytime emphasis on wellness and relaxation might mean your best athleisure wear or trendiest swimsuit, while evenings are open to interpretation. A Scarlet theme party encourages all guests to pack a red ensemble for one night of the cruise.

Junior Cruisers

There are none. No one under the age of 18 is allowed onboard.

Service

The crew onboard a Virgin Voyages ship are there to serve and make you feel welcome. But, in a twist from most other cruise lines, they are also encouraged to be themselves, allowed to engage in more friendly and casual interactions with guests. If that conversation includes colorful language, it’s not a fireable offense.

Tipping

Gratuities are included in the cruise fare for a Virgin Voyages vacation, which includes tips on drink orders. A gratuity for your therapist after a spa treatment is encouraged but discretionary.

Past passengers

The Virgin Voyages Sailing Club launches in 2023, introducing a new rewards program for loyal guests. Deep Blue Extras are the name designated for these perks, which can include expedited boarding, a hosted cocktail party, a dedicated onboard agent, premium (streaming) Wi-Fi access, $100 bar credit, select laundry service, and $10 toward specialty coffee daily.

Sea-Rovers are guests who have sailed twice between January 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023. Upon a third voyage, these loyalty guests gain access to the Deep Blue Extras as well as additional onboard credit, and more. Sea Blazers sailed in 2021and are rewarded for participating in the cruise line’s inaugural season with automatic access to all perks, including a $125 credit added to any $300 bar tab purchased, for life.
