Yellowstone and Grand Teton
We are planning a trip next fall to SLC and Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. Is the first week in October too late to visit Yellowstone and the Grand Teton? Are West Yellowstone and Jackson Hole the best areas to stay to visit the parks? All info will be greatly appreciated as I am in the process of making airline reservations.
Thanks~

September would be better. First of all, nights can get cold in October. Second some of the facilities will not be operating.
Further, the foliage is glorious is September!
As for places to stay, you are better off staying in the parks, rather than outside in West Yellowstone and Jackson.

mlj,
We just did that trip in late September (9/27-10/4) and loved it. While it did get cold at night, we were very fortunate in that we had sunshine and moderate temperatures on all days except one. We rented a convertable for that trip and were glad we did!
As for where to stay I can only tell you that we were unimpressed with West Yellowstone. It was very convenient for getting into Yellowstone (except when animals were on the road, everyone stopped to snap photos and we were backed up for miles in traffic) but the restaurants we tried were all bad (steer clear of the only Chinese restaurant--the worst we've EVER had anywhere)and the people were not particularly friendly for a "tourist" town.
Jackson was a whole different story, however. The restaurants were good, it was a great town to walk around in and the people were nice. Also, AAA got us a great rate at the Antlers Motel near downtown. The room was huge (two queen sized beds, refrigerator, etc.) and was within easy walking distance of almost everything.
I was a little concerned initially because our room was in the bottom corner at the intersection of two streets (#107) and I'm a light sleeper. It was so well insulated though that I never heard a thing. I believe the rate was $85 and when AAA booked it for us they got it reduced to $65. We learned that when you actually have AAA do it for you, they get an even lower rate than if you did it yourself using your card. Anyway, we'd stay there again.
Hope this helps!

That was a great rate! We arrived in Jackson with no reservations and most everything was booked. We paid $135.00(for 4) for a Super 8 that was clean and had a good breakfast but I am very jealous of what you got!!!

I also recommend staying in the park.
Yellowstone is quite large and requires
a lot of driving. Staying in the park
is much more convenient. Include a stay in Jackson Hole...charming town and a beautiful drive to Yellowstone.
We were there in early June and arrived
in a snowstorm! Some of the roads in
Yellowstone were closed. Enjoy your trip.
