Woo-Hoo! I finally got through to Babbo Restaurant in NYC!!!
Going to NYC for New Year's Eve with hubby (a Christmas surprise for him). The last piece of the itinerary puzzle was reservations at Babbo. Today was the first day I could book the reservation for January 1. I started calling at 10:00 a.m. when the reservation line opened. I just now -- FIVE LONG HOURS LATER (and almost wearing out the "REDIAL" feature on my cell phone -- got through to a human. We've got our table for two at 7:30. I hope the hassle of getting the reservation is worth it.
I know ... this is a totally pointless post but I knew someone out in Fodor-land would understand!

I got through in a 1/2 hour on Tuesday for December 29th (and I got 8:00) so probably your wait was so long because of New Year's--and yes, it is worth it. The food is wonderful they are unpretentious and geniunely nice (unlike alot of other "name" restaurants in NY).
Have fun!

Been to Babbo twice. Once on expense account. The other on a whim with a friend...ate at the Bar! Table with expense account was wonderful, bar area with good friend, great barkeep/waiter.... was better!
Great resturant in a clty of great resturants. Worth 5 hrs of dialing? Not sure I would do it!
Still think Gramercy Tavern is a better choice!
