What's Your Favorite Restaurant in the Manhattan Theater District?

What are your recommendations for a good pre-matinee lunch in the Manhattan Theater district?

Budget? Cuisines? Are you looking for a fast sandwich/salad or a hot meal (hard to do before a 2pm show - or is yours later?)

There are about a hundred threads below on pre-theater dining - most apply to lunch as well.

We would like a nice lunch, glass of wine, etc., before the matinee. We like Italian, French, seafood, American--we just like to eat! What are some of your favorites?

My very favorite has closed - Sam's.

The theater we are attending is on W. 45th, so if you have any particular recommendations in the general area, we would appreciate it. Starrsville, where will you go now that your favorite has closed? nytraveler-you mentioned a hundred threads below--below what? did I miss something? The matinee is at 2 PM.

Sam's would be perfect. I'll probably go to a Thai restaurant on 8th.

In general the restaurants in that area are mediocre at best, overpriced, tourist traps. Most New Yorkers avoid them, even when going to the theater.

That being said, people on this forum will cite numerous favorites, many of which are passable.

If I have to eat in that area, I choose the reliable Cuban cuisine of Havana Central.

I can get much better Italian/French/etc. elsewhere.

In spite of what Gekko says, there are decent restaurants in the theater district that are not mediocre, are not overpriced and are not tourist traps.
One is Le Madeleine on West 43rd, just off 9th Avenue. Reservations a must on matinee days. Ask for the Garden Room.
A second is Lattanzi on West 46th and a third is Orso, also on West 46th. These two are Italian.
New Yorkers definitely dine at all three.

The funniest part is that I've read more than once or twice that Gekko's beloved Havana Central is a "tourist trap"--the very type of restaurant catering to tourists that he seems to abhor. On the other hand there are many more "individual" and "neighborhood type" restaurants if you're not into the big, noisy theme places like Havana Central.

Many of my favorites are along 9th Avenue -- slightly away from the theatre district itself, but close and convenient to it. Roberto Passon is a true gem -- corner of 50th and 9th.
I really like Marseille, 44th and 9th.

Great barbeque at Virgils, French at Tout Va Bien, Italian at Orso's, or American at Joe Allen's

Esca, an italian seafood restaurant, is an absolute must. In fact it is one of the best seafood restaurants in the city! It is expensive but worth every dime. If you want a truly memorable meal & know seafood (in addition to salmon & tuna), eat here. www.esca-nyc.com

I went to Trattoria Dopo Teatro recently and it was pretty good too. Not in the same league as Esca but I'd recommend it also. www.dopoteatro.com

La Bonne Soupe is at 48 West 55th Street between 5th and 6th. I haven't been there in a few years. Their soups are great and include bread, salad, dessert and a glass of wine or other beverage for $14.95(at least according to their website). They also have salads, omelettes, etc.

We went to Maria Pia in the summer. It was lovely (we were able to eat out in their garden); and the food very good. I believe it was less that $15 p.p.
