what side of plane to sit on?

what side of plane to sit on?
We will be flying on Hawaiian Air from Maui to Kauai and from Kauai to Honalulu. Can anyone tell me what side of the plane we should sit on to get the best views? I know to get there early as it is open seating.

I won't give you any smart remarks because this is something I wish I knew ahead of time every time I fly somewhere. We are going to HA in March. I got on Amazon.com and ordered 2 books that are a wealth of information and the author tells you EVERYTHING you could ever want to know about the islands, from where to buy the best banana nut bread in the world (Maui) to where to sit on the planes for the best view. Unfortunately, a friend of mine leaving for the islands in 2 weeks is borrowing my books. But, if you have time and want to order the books, they are called Maui Revealed and Kauai Revealed, can't think of the author's name either, but search for Hawaii books and you'll find them in a flash. Books are less than $10 each, if you buy used and I've never bought a used book yet that wasn't in excellent condition. When do you leave? If I get my books back before then, I'll try to remember to look in them and let you know. Sometimes, the airline people will tell you the best side and it ends up not being the best views. you can email me direct if you want, [email protected]

Remember runways work both ways according to prevailing winds, air traffic control, etc.
Planes may usually take off in one direction with the best views on one side. If they happen to take off the other way the view would, of course, be on the other side.

When flying from Maui to Kauai (probable stopover in Honolulu):
-Right hand side: you will have a great view of Oahu as you come into Honolulu to land. Also great view of Oahu as you take off from Honolulu to Kauai.
-Left hand side: you will have a view of the west side of Maui as you take off from there. You will have a short view of Oahu as you take off from there to Kauai. You will get a very nice view of Kauai as you land there.
Kauai to Honolulu:
-Right hand side: View of Kauai as you take off. No view of Oahu as you land there.
-Left hand side: View of Kauai as you take off. Great view of Oahu as you land there.
-Right hand side: you will have a great view of Oahu as you come into Honolulu to land. Also great view of Oahu as you take off from Honolulu to Kauai.

I found that there really aren't any guarantees when flying into Honolulu from the Mainland or into Kauai.
Just depends which way the wind blows that day. (insert politician joke here).

Having just flown Lihu`e-Honolulu-Hilo and back this weekend, please allow me to interject...
Inside, facing cockpit -- left side seats will give you land view of Kaua`i upon departure; land view of O`ahu upon arrival (including Pearl Harbor; you can usually see the USS Arizona clearly).
Heading for Hilo, right side seats will give you water views of O`ahu upon departure, and _spectacular_ views of Maui, Moloka`i, Kaho`olawe & Lana`i as you fly -- and land views of Hilo as you arrive.
Departing Hilo, sit on the left side if you want to view Hawai`i island -- the Aloha flight we took hugged the entire windward coast. Sit on the right side if you want to see the aforementioned string of islands though.
Departing HNL for LIH, left side of the plane will give you views from Po`ipu to the airport as you approach Lihu`e.
As noted, all this applies only when weather and airport traffic conditions are normal.

Hey, when you get all this stuff commited to memory then perhaps you could tell the rest of us which plane to fly on that is guaranteed NOT to fly above any nasty clouds that may have gotten "in the way" and are going to spoil that supposed view I obsessed about for the last six months.

Yep...those danged clouds are our persistent "variable" when it comes to the aerial views! 
If given a choice of flying above the clouds, as opposed to _through_ them -- with all that associated thermal/moisture turbulance (urp!) -- I'll opt for above-the-clouds flying every time.
Haven't done this yet, but friends recommend that our next flight to Hana we take the small puddle jumper HNL to Kahului to Hana. Evidently these little planes are allowed (required?) to fly much lower -- supposedly low enough to spot whales (yikes!). This is the aerial "scenic route" to Hana (white-knuckles, and all).
