WHAT ISLAND TO VISIT IN HAWAII FOR OUR HONEYMOON
We need some help deciding what island to visit on our honeymoon. We finally narrowed it down to Hawaii, however we have never been there and don't know where to go. We will be spending 2 weeks in Hawaii. We are interested in night life, water activities, fishing, horseback riding, BEAUTIFUL beaches, bars, pools and a beautiful resort. Can you please help us out. I did look at the Hyatt in Maui that looked nice.

There is very little in the way of nightlife on Kauai, Lanai or the Big Island. This means Oahu or Maui, if that's important to you. Personally, I'd think of dividing my time between 2 islands- making one of them Maui and planning on more day time activities in Kauai. What is your budget, where are you traveling from and do you have friends who have been to Hawaii and what to they like?

Maui and Kauai were our two honeymoon destinations. We've been back twice and opted for Maui both times. We stayed in the Huelo area this past trip(04) and loved it as well. My wife doesn't know it but I'm surprising her for her birthday in January (05) with a trip back to Maui. It's her favorite place in the world. You can't go wrong with any island in my opinion!

I would also recommend splitting your time between 2 islands, and would definitely make one of them Oahu. Great nightlife, but also the most beautiful beaches that I've seen of the 3 islands I've been to (Oahu, Kauai and Maui). Be sure to see Sunset Beach, Turtle Beach, the Ko'Olina lagoons, Lani Kai and Hanauma Bay on Oahu. GORGEOUS!! The other islands are beautiful, too, and each has is own personality. I would pick Oahu for its beaches, huge number of options of fun things to do and see, and the nightlife, dining, shopping and overall action of Waikiki. For contrast (complete serenity and beauty), I would choose perhaps Kauai or the Big Island for your other week. I know you will love any island you choose! Have a great time!!

I think for the best of both worlds, you may want to split between Oahu and the Big Island. On Oahu, you can transition from mainland life to island life. On the Big Island, you have Mauna Kea & the stars, and of course the volcano (if lava is flowing it's a bonus!) , plus other attractions. I just went to Kona 2 weeks ago and was reminded that the island has a lot to offer!
I live on Oahu and I always recommend that people stop here first to detox, esp. if they haven't been to Hawaii before. Oahu has many reminders of city living, but supposedly is slower than the mainland, so it's a good place to clear the palate before moving on to another island.

Hi, and first off, congratulations! Its always nice to hear when people get married. As for your question, I also would say to visit two islands if possible. Oahu has the nightlife and all of the other activities that you listed. Some of the hotels you may want to take a look at may be the Halekulani, Sheraton Waikiki (Starwood now I think), the Royal Hawaiian, and the Hyatt Regency. All are in Waikiki and located on or across of Waikiki Beach. The second island I would suggest is Kauai. The pace is much slower there, very tropical and lush, and outdoor activities abound. A hotel/resort that I would suggest is Princeville resort. Its pricey, but just gorgeous. The sunsets over the bay are breathtaking and romance is definitely in the air there.
Both islands have exceptional beaches, white sand and beautiful water. Travel on both islands is fairly easy, other than traffic on Oahu.
I hope you two have a wonderful time.

Thank you for all the responses. I think we will be looking into Kauai and Maui. I dont know anyone that has visited these islands recently. Does anyone know what hotels we can check out fot the activites we are looking for? How about restaurants? We would like to eat outside the hotel some nights.

The surroundings at the Kauai Hyatt cannot be beat. There are places all over the grounds that can be very private and the pool areas are on all different levels. There are many good restaurants on Kauai. You might want to try Keoki's and Roy's for places that are close by the Hyatt.

Mama's Fish House on Maui is great and worth the price, and the Plantation House (I think that's the name) on Kauai is also very good. If you do go to Maui and Kauai, don't look for any nightlife after about 9:00 p.m. or so. Seems they roll up the sidewalks and that's it. You MIGHT be able to find something to do on Maui at night, though we couldn't, but definitely not on Kauai, in my experience. Have a nice time!!

Juanita, you must not have looked very hard! Maui has plenty nightlife! The hardest part for us is deciding where to go--so many choices! Pick up a MauiTime Weekly next time you are on the island.

No worries, Ray. Maui get plenty nightlife. West side (Lahaina/Ka'anapali) has some good places but so does the south side (Kihei/Wailea). If you stay in Hana then you not going find any at all. You'll be fine.

Since you are spending two weeks, I would split it up between two Islands. First destination, I would recommend Lanai. My wife and I spent our honeymoon on there and loved the secluded feel for a honeymoon. We stayed at the Manele Bay Hotel. There are packages that include horseback riding, Jeep rentals and many other things that make it something to remember. After this, I would recommend Honolulu for the nightlife aspect of what you are looking for. Entirely different than Lanai. Good luck.
