Vegas Day Trip

Going to Vegas in a few weeks and would like to take a full day trip to somewhere great to do something different. Doesn't need to be Grand Canyon or a helicopter ride. Anyone have a good suggestions?

When I was there in April, I took a fun raft trip on the Colorado River through Black Canyon, which started at the base of the Hoover Dam (you get a view of the dam that most people don't get to see!). It was very scenic, and our guide was very knowledgeable and informative. This is the company I went with:

If you have a car, you can meet at their office in Boulder City, but they'll pick you up at your hotel for an extra fee (which is what I did). I know that there are also companies that rent kayaks, or will take you on a guided kayak tour through the canyon; you can do an internet search to find them, if that interests you. This is a smooth-water trip, so is very safe. I know that some of the people on our raft were getting a tour of the dam with the same company at the end of our trip, but I didn't do that, as I'd toured it before (and it is pretty interesting).

If you have a car, another really neat place to visit is Valley of Fire State Park, which is about an hour's drive east of LV. It has amazing red rock formations, and if you like to take photos, is a great place to do that. There are various hikes you can take there - you can buy a small guidebook of the various hiking trails at the entrance station, or at the visitor's center.

If you want to make a really long day of it, you could drive to Zion NP, which is amazing to see, but it's about 145 miles from LV and a three hour drive, so you'd spend six hours driving back and forth - which is more than I'd want to do for a day trip!

The tour of Hoover Dam makes for a nice half day trip from Vegas.

You could consider sort of a loop. North on I-15 to Exit 75 then though the Valley of Fire State Park to Lake Mead, then follow the shoreside road back toward LV, then turn off to hit Boulder City and tour Hoover Dam.

I'll second a trip to Valley of Fire State Park. If you really don't mind a long day, then take a day trip to Zion National Park in Utah. It's a 2 1/2 hour drive one way, but very well worth it.

Was thinking of renting a car and checking out Valley of Fire, but my plan was to do this on a Sunday and all the non airport rental locations are closed.
Should I:
1. take a cab to the the airport and rent there?
2. switch the day to monday when i can rent across the street from my hotel. we fly out at 4:00 pm that day. Is that enough time?
3. do something that provides transport?
4. ditch leaving vegas all together and hang out at the pool.
