Vagabond House Inn or Casa de Carmel in California?
I am looking at these 2 inns to stay at in August 2005. Does anyone have opinions on either one? This is for a 1-night stay in the Carmel/Monterey/Pacific Grove area before venturing on to San Francisco. Would prefer to stay on the water, but rates there are high and/or booked.
Thanks!

Cheez
We stayed at the Vagabond House Inn in late April, early May for three nights and it was nice. Just a block or two from main drag. Nice shaded courtyard with chairs and water fountain. Cheeze, crackers and wine every afternoon. Expanded continental breakfast every morning made individually for each room. We stayed in two of the cheaper rooms and had no problem. No view either. We normally stay in PG or Monterey but wanted to try Carmel instead.

We stayed at The Vagabond House in October 2003. Great loctaion within 4 or 5 blocks of most shops and downtown restaurants. Delghtful courtyard, a perfect place to unwind at the end of the day. Friendly and helpful staff although we didn't meet the owner.
Our room was a little musty and it would have been nice to eat a commnual beakfast but the quality was fine and it is delivered at the time you want it. All in all, good value for he location.

Casa de Carmel is owned by the same person who owns the Monte Verde Inn. He is not on our good list. I was part of a wedding party that booked rooms at the Monte Verde and Casa Inn, but he cavalierly cancelled our reservations. The story I got was that the new manager booked the party, and he does not want groups. (Did I mention that most of us who booked are over 50?) Shouldn't he have told her the policy earlier in her training? The poor woman has now been fired, and our wedding is looking elsewhere for rooms. These places have no problem insisting on paid one-night deposits on a credit card, but a reservation means absolutely nothing. It's a classic case of a lack of integrity, or he wants a higher room rate in high season.

I don't know Casa de Carmel, but Vagabond's House is wonderful. Quiet, charming, great loc. close to the shops, galleries, restaurants. Consistent awards for one of the best West Coast B&Bs. I posted a trip report on www.tripadvisor.com with photos, and you can read a number of reviews. Website is www.vagabondshouseinn.com
