If you are interested in a day trip, Sleepy Hollow is quite nice. Here's the link:

I always enjoy a hike at the Rockefeller State Preserve on a nice autumn day

Catch a football game at West Point. See the parade of cadets, do it in the next 3 weeks for an unforgettable experience.

If you talking about an October trip, then a visit to Kykuit, the Rockefeller mansion in Pocantico Hills (adjacent to Sleepy Hollow) and a walk/hike in the aforementioned Rockefeller Park will make for a great day.

Lake Placid, NY - Stunning setting. The Mirror Lake Inn is a wonderful hotel with an excellent dining room.

East Aurora, NY (20 miles south of Buffalo) - Quaint village with good shopping, restaurants and history such as Roycroft Campus and Millard Fillmore house. Roycroft Inn is a National Historic Landmark.

Lake Keuka & Penn Yan (Finger lakes area) - Beautiful scenery. Reminds me somewhat of Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

Chautauqua Instititute - Shopping, music, art and culture.

I agree with East Aurora!
Went to visit a cousin that moved there 8 yrs ago and loved it!
It was a beautiful October. Believe it or not it went up to 80 degrees!
His home seems like it is in Mayberry RFD!
There's a great five and dime there too, called Vidler's!
You'll love it!
