Traveling Southern New Jersey on a Motorcycle

We are planning on riding our motorcycle from Chincoteague, VA to Lewes, DE & taking the ferry to Cape May around the 7th of June. Two questions: 1.) Need a town to stay at for 1 night in southern New Jersy that has a good selection of "down & out" motels so we can park the bike right in front of the room. Cape May? Bridgeton? Millville? Salem?

2.) Where is the safest place to cross from NJ to PA? Don't mind riding a little further if we can stay safer.

Your suggestions are gratefully apreciated.

As you come off the ferry there is a motor inn called Cabin City on your left where Rt.9 jogs up northward. If you keep going straight towards the Garden State parkway there is another motor court called Jersey Cape. I haven't stayed in either but the Jersey Cape looks more cared for. Further up Rt 9, between Rt 9 and the parkway is the Hy-Land which also looks fairly decent. All can be found on Google maps.

If you go into the shore towns of Stone Harbor and Avalon, there are quite a few hotels with outdoor corridors and parking right out front. These will be more expensive but the towns are very nice and crime is practically nonexistant.

I don't know what to recommend regarding crossings without knowing what you consider "safe" and where in Pa you want to go.

There are many points along the Delaware River where you can cross over from New Jersey to Pennsylvania. All are either major Interstates, main highway arteries or well travelled State and County roads. I wouldn't describe any of them as being "unsafe" and one crossing is not safer than another - thy are just different. Which one is "best" depends on where you start out, where you want to go and what you might want to see along the way. Go to Google Maps or Mapquest and play around with various routings and you'll see what I mean.

I would get a room in Wildwood. There are dozens of motels where you could park the bike in front of your room. You might consider spending a few days at the Jersey Shore if you like the beach and boardwalk.

Leaving the shore I would take the Garden State Parkway to the Atlantic City Expressway and go over the Walt Whitman Bridge to Philadelphia.

For more information including a list of hotels and motels at the Jersey Shore go to:

Have a great trip and let us know where you stayed.

Thank you all very mucxh for your responses; I will check on the hotels mentioned.

In talking about a "safe" crossing I was mostly referring to traffic volume/congestion. We would of course avoid crossing over in peak traffic times but the less-traveled the better. We are not going to Philadelphia this time - I'd rather go when we don't have the bike and take a lot of time to do Philadelphia right. Instead we will be skirting south of Philly & heading towards Gettysburg. Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

You could go across the Commodore Barry Bridge and to Rt 322 and up to Rt 1 to Rt 30 but that takes you through Chester (blech). I would go across the Delaware Memorial then to Rt 41 to Rt 30. That route will take you through horse country in Pennsylvania and Rt 30 will take you through Amish country.

I have to say that I have never been to Gettysburg and don't really know the best route so maybe someone will correct me if there is a better route. If you decide on the Del Mem route, I can give you details to get there through Southern Jersey. DD has done it often.
