We are moving from Baltimore to Seattle and it's a last minute trip I'm planning because we only just found out what week we need to move. We are taking 2 cars and 2 dogs and would like to see some sights along the way. I have most of the trip planned, but can't decide between Yellowstone or Glacier National Park. I know the dogs can't come hiking with us in either park, so is one more car-friendly than the other? I still want to be able to see some sights in the park from the road since that's as far as we can roam with our pups.

Any advice would be awesome. It's difficult to travel with dogs in places that you want to explore and they're not allowed but I really don't think I want to kennel them just so I can see some pretty sights.

Also - I've read that Custer's hiking trails are dog friendly - is this safe? Has anyone done this with their pups?

I find Glacier and Yellowstone not too great for dogs (I have 2 and have experienced these parks). You can't leave them in the car while you hike either. However, the Grand Tetons have a lot of USFS area around them that is great for dogs. It is just south of Yellowstone. Another option is to drive thru Yellowstone, not stopping much, to the Gardiner entrance. After that, you don't have far to go where your dogs can get out and stretch their legs, walk or whatever, along a beautiful river, just outside the park. You won't experience much of the parks this way, but at least you will get a taste of them.
I don't know about Custer's hiking trails, but I have been to the battlefields, and there are some areas you can walk thru there,tho it is probably very hot in the summer. It is open fields (if it is the same place I am thinking of) The museum is very interesting. Have you thought about the Rocky Mts? I don't know them well, but there is a lot of less-regulated area there.

I agree w/ karns. Neither park is at all dog-suitable. The idea of 'just passing through' and stopping on the other side is a good one.

We got stuck with our dog once at a park and what we did was take turns. One would stay with our dog and the other would go see the sites and then we'd trade. It's not idea, but an idea. If you are willing to do that, then Yellowstone might be do able. You can see some of the geysers from the road like on the Firehole Lake Drive and other areas.

Yellowstone has far more places to park, get out of the car and walk a short distance to see sights than Glacier, which would mean the dogs would be in the car for only a short time.

On the other hand, Glacier's beauty is seen from the road while driving so you wouldn't have to get out of the car to see things. Do the Going to the Sun Road--both ways if possible since you see a different view from each direction. The southern road isn't anything great--just a road.

Not sure when you are coming out but you should be aware that GTTS road in Glacier will probably not open the full length until Mid July due to the heavy snowpack we had this winter.
