The bus is cheapest, but the train is much more comfortable and pleasant. Check out antrak.com to see if they have any special deals. The Acela fast trains often cost far more than the "regular" trains, which IIRC are called Metroliners.

There are plenty of buses running from Boston to NYC. There are several local bus companies that run buses between the Chinatown areas of both cities, which are relatively safe and centrally located, as well as regional lines like Bonanza Bus, which runs between major cities inthe region.

Wow, thanks for all your help. I have also been looking at the possibility of hiring a car and driving there, as this seems to be pretty cheap (there are 2 of us), would you recommend this as an option or would bus/train be better?

I was getting ready to post the information that Anonymous just provided you with so I'll just add a P.S. to his post that, depending on the time of day, you can get a one-way fare as low as $15 on the Chinatown buses. I don't think you can drive it yourself for that price.
