Toll Roads and Rental Cars: Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming

In late September we will be renting a car in Salt Lake City and will drive to Jackson and Yellowstone, Wyoming; Bozeman to Helena to West Glacier to Flathead Lake to Missoula, Montana; to Salmon, Idaho; to Salt Lake City, Utah. Rental car companies always try to sell transponders for the toll roads at inflated prices. Should we expect any toll roads on the route I have described? Would we need to buy a different transponder for each state, or is there one that cover all four states? Are they sold in Walmarts and drugstores, or are there state facilities where we would need to purchase them?

I had to look it up, but apparently there is a 60+ mile toll road on I-15 from Hwy 6 north to 126, though it might only apply to the Express/HOV Lanes.

If you don't have an Express Pass (and you probably won't) and you drive on a toll road, a scanner will pick up the license plate, bill the rental car agency which will then bill you, much much later, adding on a hefty processing fee. And there is usually not even an option to pay cash at the time of the drive.

I drove a few miles on a toll road in a rental car getting back to the Denver airport at the beginning of September last year and got billed in early December--for $18.50!

You can request your nav system to route you to avoid toll roads.

We have traveled on several vacations in that area, and I don't recall toll roads. (Perhaps an optional express lane, nothing that sticks out.) There will be a lot of wide open country.

Musicfan, which cities along I 15 would intersect with highways 6 and 126, please? I am having trouble locating routes 6 and 126 on my map.

I drove a small section of I-15 north of Hwy 6 (south of Salt Lake) last year and don't recall tolls. Also don't recall tolls in any of the parts of ID/MT/WY we drove last year and we were in all of those areas except Bozeman and Helena.

There are no tolls in Utah. That toll is ONLY for the express/HOV lanes. I live in SLC and drive that section of road several times a year as well as up and down the Wasatch Front several times a week.

Thanks to all of you for your helpful replies! We will not buy a transponder. Problem solved. We love this forum.
