Things to do in Cape Cod with toddler

Going to Cape Cod for the first time the last week in July with my husband and 20 month old. Any suggestions on things to do, any little amusement parks, nice shopping areas, etc. We will most likely be staying at the Ocean Edge in Brewster. Thanks

Well, toddlers love the beach if you stay away from waves. The Atlantic beaches have waves and the north side beaches tend to be cold, except in very shallow water. But there is a lot of very shallow water.

Route 6A, which more or less begins in Sandwich and ends in Brewster, is everything you would want a Cape Cod road to be -- gorgeous, quaint as all get out, and lots of fabulous shops selling antiques, clothing, books, etc.

Your child is too young for the Thornton W Burgess house, but if you go back when s/he is 4 or 5 and have read her/him the stories from their public library, it will be enjoyable.

Eastham and Chatham have great shopping. Wellfleet has a great ice cream store in what passes for the center of town, but P-Town is going to be a bit hectic for a less than two type.

I'll let all the grandparents chime in on parks, playgrounds, etc.

I have been to the Cape with my little ones who are now 7 and 3. We went when my youngest was only 8 months, and then following year when she was about 1 1/2. The first time we stayed in Hyannisport which not nearly as quaint as many other parts of the Cape but did have a carousel and arcade on the Main St and my girls loved that! There are also many, many mini golf courses throughout that part of the Cape.
The following year we stayed in Falmouth which we found to be the perfect destination for our family. We were able to walk to the beach, which had calm waters. This was pretty important to us as many beaches on the Cape are rough.
We had a short drive into town which is very quaint with little shops, a kids book store (I think that may have closed?), an arcade and a park that sometimes had live music at night. We rented surreys (also walking distance from where we were) and rode around the neighborhood. On another day, we took the ferry over to Martha's Vineyard and the girls loved walking through the "gingerbread house" neighborhood. Falmouth is also the next town over from Wood's Hole, another quaint little town with a gorgeous beach - Nauset Light.
Have a wonderful time!

The bay beaches in Brewster are a wonderful place for toddlers. No waves to speak of, and the tide goes out so far that you can walk on the tidal flats looking for shells and things in the tide pools for miles.

Sheep Pond is a beautiful clear fresh water pond in Brewster with a small beach off the road called Fisherman's Landing. You will need a Brewster beach sticker to park at the bay beaches or the freshwater ponds before 3 PM. There is another fresh water beach on Lond Pond near Sheep Pond if the Sheep Pond lot is full. You can get beach stickers at the town hall.

There have been regularly scheduled puppet shows in Brewster at the First Parish Brewster Church. I believe they are doing some reconstruction of the church now, so I don't know whether they will be hosting these shows this summer but it is worth finding out.

The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster sponsors many programs and may have hands-on exhibits for toddlers.

The Brewster Store, an iconic general store on Route 6A, sells penny candies (although they probably don't cost a penny any more) and has a working nickelodeon.

When my kids were young, they really enjoyed the Pirate Cruise, which we have taken out of Hyannis and out of Chatham. The kids get their faces painted as pirates, and you set sail to find treasure. On the way, there's a pirate cut-out figure in the water, and the kids "shoot" him with water cannons. Then, you see an X floating in the water (after all, "X marks the spot", and a Treasure chest is hoisted up and the kids get to share some of the loot (think Dollar Store type stuff).

But, it is nicely done and it's nice to be on the water.

Even though my kids are much older now, we still love Mayflower Beach on Cape Cod Bay. The water is warmer than the ocean, and shallow puddle type areas form, which are perfect (and safe b/c there are no strong waves) to plunk kids down into. (They are also perfect for skimboarding, which my kids really like to do).
