things to do in Atlanta, Georgia

will be there for 5 days at a conference. all expenses paid, except for activities of course. food is reimbursed. not a ton of free time. no car. it's at the Georgia World Congress Center. it will be mid October. what should I do in my spare time? any good places to eat? any good sightseeing to be had? I am 30 years old and will be there without my husband. a few co-workers, but they are older and might not want to hang with me, ha ha. thanks for your suggestions!

What are your interests? What do you like to do during your usual free time? Outdoors? Art? Theatre? Sight-seeing? Nightclubs?

The aquarium is walking distance of the World Congress Center. On MARTA you can travel to the art museum and Buckhead for Phipps Plaza and Lennox Square shopping. Atlanta restaurants from downtown to mid-town to Buckhead are superb. Oughta cover 5 days with no problem at all.

We liked the Martin Luther King sites, the Carter Library, the Atlanta History Center. We'd like to see CNN on another trip. We though the Coca-Cola place was a waste of time and money.

Most of the museums are closed evenings which is probably the only time when you are free. The High Museum is open Thursday evenings and sometimes on Friday.

The biggest attraction in ATL is shopping. You can take Marta to Arts Center (which is where the High Museum is) and then walk upstairs to the road and take the free shuttle to Atlantic Station. Atlantic Station is an outdoor mall/ recreation district build around expensive condos and office buidings. I could spend an whole evening at IKEA myself. There are easily a dozen restaurants to choose from. If you need to stock up on groceries for your room there is a Publix and a Target there.

Lenox Mall is also easily accessible by Marta and across the street is Phipps Plaza.

Did you do a board search? There's plenty of info on Atlanta here.
