The CAT from Portland to Yarmouth

Alright...we are about to take the CAT in a couple weeks and are hearing horror stories about seasickness... someone just posted that the whole boat was sick last week. Can anyone tell us about their five hour ride from Portland to Yarmouth? Looking forward to a great few days up there and then going from Yarmouth to Bar Harbor for a couple more before driving home to Boston. We KNOW we want to go on this trip..have the trip all planned. It is just the CAT that has us thinking now...should we try another route?

Thanks, NannyJan

they don't call it the "Vomit Rocket" for nothing!

sorry, I'm mostly kidding. I took the Cat from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth. And I've taken the cat from New London to Orient Point across the Long Island sound a couple of times. The thing about these catamarans is they ride high on the water, unlike a more tradiional keeled ship which cuts through the waves. So they seem to be pretty sensitive to rough seas. that said, you don't get rough seas all the time. Odds are, you'll be fine. I had no trouble on the Yarmouth-Bar Harbor run, the sea was calm as glass.

if you are sensitive, you might want to pack some dramamine, however, just in case.

I get seasick just thinking about boats of any size - even felt queezy while touring a docked Navy ship.

Have taken the Cat several times - each time took over the counter seasick medicine at the lowest dose and was fine - a little sleepy from medication so husband had to drive when we got off, but fine.

These waters are often rather rough - so just be prepared.

I just took the CAT from Portland to Yarmouth two weeks ago. It may have been my report you read. We had bad weather conditions..rain and total fog...VERY rough water. I had been warned and my friend and I took Dramamine and did not feel at all sick. Others did not heed the warning and were very sick throughout the ride. They actually were taking people away in wheel chairs. I don't know where they took them! The crew was wonderfula about taking care of everyone. Take motion sickness meds a good hour before the scheduled take off time and you should be fine. My friend took another dose after four hours.
As I said, we were fine, but at least half of the passengers were sick during the ride...some REALLY sick.

this may or may not help - but looking at the horizon helps some to feel better.

we took the CAT last August and had a great ride. Very smooth and lots of fun. And it did rain in the middle of our trip. in fact, it poured. And we were still fine. I did not see anyone sick. I thought the time would drag, but it really didn't. There are lots of things to keep you occupied, and I loved going "outside" in the back to really experience the water and the wake the CAT made.
I was a bit fearful at first because I don't like that motion, but once we took off and I could relax (breathing deeply in to the count of 4 and out to the count of 8) I was fine. And it saves a lot of time. We drove the first time and took the CAT home. NO horrow stories from us.

That was part of the problem with our ride on the CAT. It was so foggy that we couldn't even see the water at all let alone the horizon.

Thanks for the responses. We will take our Bonine and just not worry about it. Hopefully, the weather will be sunny and great and our ride will be smooth as silk! Looking forward to Nova Scotia!

have a great trip. Nova Scotia is beautiful. Don't miss Peggy's Cove - I know it is touristy, but who cares when it is so beautiful.

Peggy's Cove is on our agenda. I have been once before...loved it! We are doing Annapolis Royal for one night, two nights in Halifax and one night at White Point Beach before ferrying over to Bar Harbor and Camden for 3 nights...can't wait!
Thanks, Jan
