Not necessary but may be cheaper depending on how many days and how many people have to get to Breck.

I agree no. If there's a blizzard you shouldn't be driving, period. Another thing--rental companies are notorious for putting crappy tires on their 4wd rentals, which really negates any benefit you might have gotton from the 4wd. I can't tell you how many times I've read on ski forums about people renting SUVs and ending up in a ditch or just refusing to take the rental in the first place, due to the tires.

Sometimes you are on the road and cannot escape an approaching blizzard. In the mountains, these things happen.
An AWD is always nice, I think. I wonder if you can only get an SUV in AWD, or do they offer sedans? I did not know rental companies put sub-standard cars on their AWDs. Never heard that.

It is not random that Subarus are a very popular car in mountainous states with serious snow.
They are like driving a car but with AWD and lots and lots of ground clearance, more than most SUV's.
Driving a 4WD if you are not used to it can get you in big trouble quickly, good tires or bad.
