South Carolina - road trip suggestions
My boyfriend and I are planning a trip for August and are interested in visiting Charleston - I have been once before but several years ago, and he has never been.
Whenever we travel, we like to spend a few nights in one place, but then like to spend a few days with a rental car, exploring different areas/scenery.
Seeking suggestions on both round-trip itineraries, and trips that incorporate a second destination (Savannah? Washington DC?) that we could fly home from - as long as the journey is still cool! The trouble is we will only have 1 week.
Thank you!!!

Savannah would be a great add-on with a week (they're only a couple of hours apart), but I'd check on flight prices. Neither the Charleston nor Savannah airports are large, so it might be pretty expensive to fly from there. You'd have a better shot at getting a direct flight from DC, but that's a lot of driving from Charleston.
Asheville, NC might also be good if you're interested in more of a contrast with Charleston than Savannah would provide, plus since it's in/near the mountains, the weather will be cooler in August. You could fly home from there, or you could drive to Charlotte, where you might be able to get a direct flight.

Where are you coming from? That determines where you should fly to and from.
As Jett says, Charleston-Beaufort-Savannah make a nice combination, maybe going on to the Georgia Sea Islands. You could spend two nights in each and drive US 17 between them.
My brother lives on St Simons Island and usually flies from Jacksonville, FL unless he is using points because Savannah is so expensive.
Many people fly into Charlotte and drive the three or so boring hours to Charleston because it is usually a lot cheaper. Even if you pay a drop off fee for a one way car rental from CLT to JAX, it may be cheaper than flying into or out of Charleston or Savannah.
