Savannah Home and Garden Tours

Has anyone been in Savannah during the Home and Garden Tours. Which tour would you recommend?

Every year, it is a little different. If you have not checked out the site:
http://www.savannahtourofhomes.org/tourinfo.asp

do so, and maybe it will help you decide.

If it were me, On Thursday, I would do either the S/E Quadrant tour or the Preservation Seminar. Then on Friday, I would do the walking tour of the churches. This tour will take you around most of the major squares.

Saturday and Sunday, they list "Garden Tours" Since all of the gardens are next to or behind the houses, you would get some extra views of the outside of the houses. You will have seen some of them (but not gone into any) during the walking tour of the churches.

Tickets go fast. So don't wait. If I had to choose just one tour, I think I would take the churches because you would get to see a lot of the Historic District. (But make sure you are up to walking!)

I agree with Ailee's recommendations. Wear clothes to layer on and off, take along bottled water, and a camera. You'll be amazed with the friendliness and the people you'll meet, and surprised to learn how far people travel for this exciting showcase of nature's best. Last year I met a couple of engineers from John Deere along with avid gardeners and darling people who simply love beauty.

We enjoyed this so much last year, we're going again this year!

We did morning and afternoon tours each day. But, we also arrived a day early and booked Bobby Davis for the squares, churches, hidden gardens and gorgeous iron work everywhere.

I would recommend going on as many as possible, but it doesn't really matter which you choose. All were fabulous!

This year, we're going on only one each day.

Totally agree with layers. We were adding/removing all day every day. One day it poured down rain off and on all day and into the night.

I agree that one a day is good. Each segment is so different from the others, but everyone I've been on has been wonderful.

Water. Keep bottled water with you. It's amazing how hot a spring day can be in Savannah.

I booked three tours for Friday and two tours for Saturday. We are doing both of the evening tours--Journey back in Time for Friday, and St. Bonaventure Cemetary at night with supper in the square. We also booked lunch at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House and at Paula Deen's (I know that Paula Deen's is way too touristy. My DH wants to go anyway). I hope I didn't book too many tours.

While everything that you have read about Lady & Sons is true, remember that touristy is a relative term - it's not Coney Island. I would concede that Mrs. Wilkes' food is much better but we had 1 of our most enjoyable lunches ever at Paula's-the atmosphere was delightful.

Just around the corner from Mrs. Wilkes is a fun, darling shop, La Paperie (on Jones Lane on Whitaker). Clever notecards, uncommon candles and sophisticated ... but fun! ... things. The owner and her staff will have more recommendations about that area's "Design District" of boutique shops near Forsyth Park. The perfect opportunity to walk off a few calories from the from the unforgettable southern comfort foods meal.
