Road Trip... LA to Santa Barbara. Is it realistic??

OK so I need your thoughts... Headed to LA at the end of the week for 2 nights in LA with family. Then we'll head out mid-morning on Tuesday for Solvang by way of the coast -- is this too much for one day? We'll stay the night in Solvang and drive to Santa Barbara for the next night. I know traffic in CA can be horrible... I dont want to spend my trip in a car. Is our timeline realistic? Or should we stay in Santa Barbara both nights maybe? HELP!

If you drive from LA to Solvang by way of the coast you will drive through Santa Barbara. California residents can tell us best, but it seems to me that it would not be a long drive from LA to Santa Barbara - about 100 miles and then 35 miles to Solvang if going overland, maybe 50 if you stick to the coast. Perhaps I'm missing something in your original question. The last time I did this drive I left Calimesa, CA, (a good hour east of LA) had lunch in Santa Barbara and then went on to Morro Bay (120 miles N of Santa Barbara) not too taxing even with wife and three youngsters along.

Very doable. We drove to Santa Barbara in December from Orange County - a good hour south of LA. My only suggestion is to wait until rush hour is over to leave...

Thank you so much for your comments! I read in an earlier post that traffic was bad and it could take 3 hours by way of th coast to get to Santa Barbara so I thought I'd ask you all. Any other tips or suggestions on where to stop or what to see would be great! Thanks!

I live near Santa Barbara, and your trip is totally do-able. If you leave LA by mid-morning, you should be in Solvang for a late lunch. Once you get north of Thousand Oaks the traffic should not be a problem. My recommendation for lunch in Solvang is a casual little cafe on Atterdag Rd. called the Greenhouse Cafe. Their Danish sausage and red cabbage is great! And for a mid-afternoon snack or possible breakfast the next morning, be sure and stop at Mortensen's Bakery for Danish pastries.

Do stop and see the Santa Barbara Mission, and any other missions that might be listed. They are part of California history and all are different. I think there is one near Solvang... can't remember as I saw them years ago.

The mission in Solvang is the Santa Ynez Mission, and is practically right downtown. The Santa Barbara Mission in Santa Barbara is beautiful, too.
