road trip houston south carolina

I am visiting my brother this summer in Houston. We plan to drive from there to some friends in Beaufort, Carolina, stopping in New Orleans and Florida along the way. We will have about 20 days in total to do this, including travel time back as well. My kids want to see "Disney" my husband wants to see the Everglades and I just want to have a good time and not be lost, mugged or stressed out. My kids are 10, 14, and 12 they are excellent traveller's and don't mind sight seeing. Any trip advise would be great, B&B's, good food and so on, we don't want too much motor way travel.

I did that drive a few years back without Disney.
I enjoyed Breaux Bridge LA. Cute town, great food. I got off I10 in MS to see Gulfport and Pass Chritian, but they were still building back when I was there. The beaches there are gorgeous. I also stopped here, which was really interesting

It will be hot and humid. Get bug spray

The Lowcountry of SC is gorgeous. You may want to see Savannah and Charleston while you are in the area. If you need specific recs for those let me know.

Could you clarify a few things about your trip?

Does the 20 days include time visiting your brother, or is it just for the trip to SC and FL?

How long do you plan to stay with your friends in SC? And if the 20 days includes the time at your brother's house, how long will are you planning to be there?

How many days in New Orleans?

How many days do you want to spend in Orlando? Do you want to visit only the Disney parks, or do you want to include Universal Studios, Sea World, and/or other area attractions?

You need to factor in a full day between New Orleans and Orlando and a full day between the Everglades and Beaufort. Allow at least 9 hours for each, not counting stops - and that would be on Interstate highways (limited- access or "motor ways"). It would be considerably longer on other highways.

Also allow at least two days to get from Beaufort back to Houston (that would be driving around 14 hours each day). You might want to make it three days with some stops along the way. That's at least four days (and maybe five) out of your trip right away, not counting driving from Houston to New Orleans or Orlando to the Everglades, which would be at least 5-6 hours each.

Also, if you were planning to fly home the day after you got back from SC, I would add in an extra day to recover from the long road trip before your flight!

OK we will arrive in Houston on the 25th July, est, and will leave the US on the 26th/27th August. I think we will spend around 7 nights with my brother and plan to return to him around the 23rd/24th August. We have also planned the following 1 week to travel to Florida, 1 week in Florida, the rest to be spent visiting our friends in Beaufort and traveling back to Houston. All this is flexible at the moment and we're open to advice. Thanks

Consider taking beach days along the Florida panhandle. Santa Rosa Island to Destin is a nice stretch with white sand and emerald green water.

Taking a week to get from Houston to Orlando sounds reasonable. Depending on how long you want to stay in New Orleans and what you want to see along the way, you might be able to do it in less than 7 days. By the way, are your children girls or boys? If boys, they might enjoy the battleship USS Alabama in Mobile, Alabama (about 2 hors east of New Orleans) and/or the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida (about 3 hours east of New Orleans) .

A week for Orlando and the Everglades might not be enough time. That really depends on how many days you want to spend at Disney World (and any other theme parks). If you do not visit the Johnson Space Center while in Houston, you might want to go to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida (at Cape Canaveral, east of Orlando).

Do you know what you want to do in the Everglades and what else you might want to see in south Florida? Keep in mind that the weather during your visit will be hot and humid everywhere you are going (during your entire trip). It will be the wet season in the Everglades, meaning lots of insects.

Also, the hurricane season will be well underway by August - no telling when or if one might come along, but as eastern Florida is a long peninsula, there is only one way to go to evacuate from them. The does not mean that you should not visit. It just means you need to pay attention to the weather reports and prepare to act accordingly. That advice applies for your entire trip as well, as you will be on or near the coast the whole time, except maybe the trip back to Houston from Beaufort.

An ambitious trip! We've done the New Orleans to Orlando route before (many years ago).

A couple of comments--hurricane season officially starts in June, although the season heats up Aug/Sept.

August is hot, hot, hot in all the states you're visiting. I'm not sure where you're originally from but be aware that summer in the South = hot and HUMID.
