R.I.P. Midway Airlines

First of probably several corporate casualties of this overwhelming human horror: Midway Airlines has thrown in the towel. It will not start up again when the FAA lifts the ground ban.

Midway filed bankruptcy several weeks ago and would have probably folded anyway. They just did it sooner than later. We cannot let this tragedy disrupt our lives and the economy, otherwise they (terrorists) will have achieved their objectives.

Jym - here in N.C. we're well aware Midway had already filed for bankruptcy protection. And/but I don't think was a matter of "letting" the tragedy disrupt anything, nor do I think the terrorists had Midway's shaky condition in mind.

But Midway is folding because of the insurmountable costs of dealing with the aftermath of the flight ban loaded on top of what will undoubtedly be a very expensive re-tooling of the airline industry to reach adequate levels of security. For its part, Midway (Robt. Ferguson) said that a substantial drop in business travel will be inevitable, making it impossible for them to recoup and repay their bills.

Midway was unstable for years. Sure, the airlines took a hit by being grounded, but there was no choice. If the airlines would have taken security a little more seriously, maybe things would have been different. IMO, Ferguson's statement is just going to make the terrorists happy that they made a US Airline fold.

What is _with_ you guys? You seem to be taking some sort of odd delight and relish in Midway's demise and yet reprimanding them for giving comfort to bin Lad'n. A truly peculiar take on this.

And my original post wasn't designed to provoke any sympathy for Ferguson, who unquestionably made some terrible judgments and treated his employees badly, I thought.

But there is a casualty for the employees, for those who use RDU airport, for the Research Triangle economy. And the reasons for the timing of Midway's collapse -- the pre-existing weakness of the economy colliding with bin Lad'n's attacks (and I doubt that it's anyone else's although some countries may have helped out) -- are indicative of what may happen to other and other regions outside the wealthy coastal cities.

Midway's collapse is not the human tragedy that the WTC/Pentagon attacks represent. But I think it is the canary in the coal mine .....
