Rainbow Ranch or Big Sky Resort

My husband and I are planning a vacation to Montana in July and thought about staying in either Big Sky Resort or Rainbow Ranch. Any thoughts on which would be better? Any other suggestions for the area other than those two? Thanks!

Check out 320 Guest Ranch. I've driven by it and it is very nice and I have had friends stay there who loved it--and they are hard to please.

I live in Big Sky and actually work for another beautiful lodge in the area. The Rainbow has a wonderful dining room, the rooms are appointed very nicely and it is on the Gallatin River. Big Sky Resort is just down the road about 4 miles, and offers dozens of lodging options. They vary from Condominiums from low to high price range and same with hotel rooms and some neat homes that can also be rented. When looking for a place to stay, think about what you want to do when you in the area. Each area is close enough that you can stay at one and still dine or stay at the other. If you would like more information, please do not hesitate to email. I am happy to help, I have done it for many others.

Hi Scott, I am looking for a ski-in/ski-out place to stay in Big Sky for Feb/Mar '04. Looking at the Summitt or Moonlight Cabins. Any thoughts, suggestions?

We travel to Big Sky every winter. Have stayed in the Beaverhead condos, Summit and in Moonlight Basin. We prefer the Summit. The ski in/out convenience can't be beat and the accomodations are very nice. We have kids in tow and it's right next to the ski school. Moonlight Basin was nice - but it's removed from the rest of the resort and if you are traveling with children, is harder for them to access "kinder" runs and ski school. We'll be at Snowbird and Alta in 2004, but we're back to Big Sky in 2005 - can't beat the terrain, scenery and NO LIFT LINES!

Thank you Mellyz. It is just my partner and me - no kids. What time of the year do you usually go to Big Sky? I have scheduled 02/28 - 03/06. Any idea of the crowds during that time?

We usually ski in Feb. Last year was president's week - again NO LINES. I was amazed. Your timeframe should be great - lots of snow. The Summit is a superb property. since it's just the two of you - look into Moonlight Basin also - it's removed from the main resort area, but the ambience is wonderful. Are the cabins the Cowboy Cabins in Moonlight Basin? The are OK - hottub on deck, but kind of close to each other. If you stay at The Summit - ask for a one bedroom CORNER condo - nice configuration and great view if you get one staring up at Lone Peak. Don't miss a dinner at Buck's T4 in the valley - great game and Montana Beef.

We are staying at the Cabins at Moonlight. I did ask for an end one. I haven't heard them called the Cowboy Cabins, so I don't know. Thanks for the dinner recommendation. I would welcome more!

What about Lake Condominiums at Big Sky? Any comments?

Lake Condos are - well - OK. I haven't been in them, but have heard they are acceptable - not 8 or 9's on the timeshare rating scale. They are located on a small lake (really a pond) quite a hike away from the lifts and skiier services center, at the entrance of the Mountain Village. An uphill hike. There MAY be a shuttle bus.

The Lodge at Moonlight is lovely - small, but beautiful. They have a HUGE rock fireplace, with Mountain Goats on the ledges. Their pool and spa has rock ledge hot tubs - very unique. Another Restaurant we like is The Cinnamon Lodge - up the Gallatin River Valley about 10 miles toward Yellowstone. Used to be a quaint little log cabin, but fire took it down last year. They rebuilt, with a log theme - nice cozy fireplace. Excellent authentic Mexican and Tex Mex, great Margartias. Bucks T4 will come pick you up - but you'll need a car for Cinnamon. Both are very popular and require dinner resv. Moonlight's own restaurant is great also.

Try a day of cat skiing with Montana Backcountry Adventures. They have great tours and are located right in Moonlight.

Any more ?? just ask- was Up North getting the ski cabin ready for the snow. Sorry for the delay.
