Question about Getty Centre

Want to drive to see the Getty Centre from Costa Mesa. I looked at the Getty website. It sort of sounds as if it's hard to access the place. We are older travelers and if it is too difficult to get to and park, we don't want to even try.

Can someone give me some advice?...is parking reserved?...does it fill up early?...just need some feedback.

Thank you

The Getty has two sites, the Center in LA which is newer and houses more art and history, and the Villa in Malibu and is a Roman villa housing Roman, Greek and Eturia pieces. Parking is $15 for either but the Villa requires advanced parking reservations. Both also have disability parking, which I recall being well planned but I did not use. There are trams, elevators, etc. at both places.

I think both are terrific places to visit.

The Getty Center is easy to visit, especially on a weekday during the school year. Weekends during the school year would be more busy, and almost any day during the summer would be the most busy. There is ample parking at street level, and electric trams ferry visitors to the top of the hill where the galleries and gardens are located. The paths through the gardens are mostly paved and fairly level.

I think the Getty Villa would be slightly more difficult to visit for a personal with mobility issues. It feels more spread out, so greater distances to walk if you want to see everything.

Views from both are beautiful on even a marginally clear day.

Oh c'mon! We older drivers are the best! Just get on the I-405 North from the Westin and take it on an exhilarating and scenic drive to the Getty Center drive exit, as it says on the Getty web site, and follow the signs to the underground parking, which does not require a reservation. The last time we went, it was crowded and we ended up at the Nibelung level. Then walk to the elevators, go up to the tram level and take the tram up to the museum entrance. It's free! Except for parking.

What ballets do you plan to see at Segerstrom Hall?

I have no idea why the other respondents think you may have trouble getting around. Because you're "older"? Hmmm.

dbdurand, the OP used the word "access" and said they might not go if it's "too difficult to get to." Perhaps I misunderstood the OP's comments, but if someone uses the word access I include info on mobility issues. If the OP has no mobility issues, he/she can ignore that portion of my post. As can you.

Jean, my apologies. My last comment was unnecessary.

All I see you asking about is driving/parking. Not mobility.

If so - why do you think it is difficult? It is very well signposted and the parking is well organized.

Then as has been explained, you take elevator/tram to get to the Museum itself.

If you have other specific questions/concerns, let us know.

And if you tell us where you are staying, we can give you detailed driving directions.

Someone asked what ballets we are seeing...Bolshoi....and then Alivn Ailley dancers.
OK so we should be able to do the Getty..it sounds to me when I read the website that the parking may fill up...but I am reassured we can do the rest. We are pretty fit but there is a fatigue factor too. After the Getty we are off to Solvang......
