PORTLAND, MAINE

We'll be in Portland, Maine 9/30 - 10/5. We hope to see the fall color at it's best! We plan to rent a car, what would be a good area we could easily drive to & see great fall color? Something we could do for the better part of the day, but, still be back at our hotel in the OLD PORT area of Portland the same evening. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Anything else you can suggest of things NOT to be missed would be helpful, too. None of us have been there before.
Thanks

Today mainefoliage.com is showing 0-10% color for the Portland area, so you might want to check the site just before you leave. Portland is a very nice little city. You might consider a cruise. I believe they have lighthouse tours and island tours. And there are ferries that could take you out to an island for a day. If you like ice cream, look for Beal's in the Old Port area. Freeport, home of LL Bean and outlet stores, is not far. I enjoy exploring the coastline, but if you are looking for foliage, others who might suggest good day trip destinations inland.

Definately take a ferry ride. It was the highlight of our stay in Portland a couple summers ago. We took the "mailboat" run. I believe Casco Bay Ferries was the name of the company.

A drive out to Sebago Lake would be nice, you might see some fall colors but go towards the end of your trip.
