Please critique my Maui itinerary
Good morning! FH and I are going to Maui in June for our honeymoon and I would like to get some feedback on our preliminary itinerary. This is definitely not set in stone at all, we just want to have some sort of a game plan.
DAY 1: Arrive mid-afternoon from Tampa. Stop by the store on the way to the Four Seasons, check in, scope out the hotel, light dinner at the hotel or in Kehei.
DAY 2: 6:45am-11:00am rafting/snorkling trip at Kanaio coast with Blue Water Rafting. Afternoon - relax at hotel. Evening - Warren & Annabelle's
DAY 3: All day - relax at hotel/check out Wailea beaches. Evening - Dinner at Roy's in Kehei
Day 4: All day - day trip to Honolulu (FH wants to see Pearl Harbor). Flight leaves at 8:30am and returns at 5:00pm. Evening - dinner at hotel/in room
Day 5: Morning - Breakfast at Four Seasons. All day- Relax at hotel/Wailea. Late afternoon/evening - walk around/shop in Lahaina. Dinner in Lahaina
Day 6: Day - Visit Haleakala (not for sunrise though). Evening - ultimate romantic dinner at Four Seasons (my parent's best friends gave us this as a wedding gift!
Day 7: Morning - Parasailing at Kaanapali Beach with UFO Parasailing. Afternoon - lunch in Lahaina. Evening - ?
Day 8: Pack, check out, fly home.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My questions:
Suggestions for dinner in Lahaina the night of 5.
Are we going to regret not doing the road to Hana? Based on our current plans, should we try and fit it in?
What other restaurants are "must-eats"?
Thanks so much for your feedback!
Meg
Hi. Sounds like fun. One suggestion: If possible, I'd try to package the Warren & Annabelle show with one of the other days that you will be in Lahaina -- day 5 or 7. It will take you 45 minutes to an hour to drive from Wailea to the show (plus time to find parking), then back after. On my trip last month, we did that drive just for the show. The traffic was bad on the way up, we were late, and it was a bit of a drag. It's a pretty drive, but I don't think I'd want to do it three times in seven days.
I would recommend David Paul's for one of your dinners in Lahaina...nice restaurant with GREAT food. Also, if you want something casual Cheeseburger in Paradise is fun...the food is just fine, but the reason to go is the atmosphere.
And I don't think you are "missing out" by not doing the Road to Hana. It's fun, but not the most important thing in the world. But maybe after Haleakala on day 6 you could spend some time in Paia...there are a lot of fun artsy shops there and usually you can enjoy watching a lot of windsurfers out in the water. As mentioned frequently on this board...lunch at Mama's Fish House would be nice, too!
But your itinerary looks great! The most important thing is that you are doing what YOU want to do and that's going to make your trip so memorable!
On perhaps the day you go to Warren and Annabelles, drive to Kapalua first for dinner at Sansei. The most amazing, creative sushi I've ever had - and I eat sushi frequently! Do NOT go to the Sansei in Kihei. For some reason it is not nearly the same quality as the one in Kapalua.
The only thing I would change is to NOT do the Warren & Annabelle's show the first day you get there. It's a 6 hour time difference for you, that's like going to Europe! Except in your case it's going to feel like 9pm at 3 in the afternoon.
I personally would not want to do the drive from Lahaina back to Wailea under those conditions. Instead maybe see about doing one of the Luaus in the Wailea area. It won't be the best Luau ever, but they start early enough and they're close to where you're staying such that it won't be a major epic trying to get home to your hotel at night.
Also, I had the best dinner EVER at IO's Grill on Front street in Lahaina. It was much, much better than our dinner at Mama's Fish house If you're going to go to Mama's I'd suggest going for lunch during the day. Probably best on Day 6. On that day I'd hit Haleakala, Makawao, and Mama's for lunch. Maybe going up Haleakala in the morning but after sunrise, or doing Makawao in the morning, then back tracking to Paia for lunch at Mama's and then going up the Volcano.
