How many people?
I've found on SOME occasions that, for two people, renting a car from one city to another is cheaper than mass transit, even after paying the drop off fee. For three people, this is almost a given. If you can do the drive in less than 24 hours (not easy for everyone, but do-able), the cost can be close for even one person.

Not all mass transit. I figure that for two it would cost $48 one way to go from Philadelphia to Boston using a Chinatown bus service. Even if the rental were less than that per day, one would have to add gas and tolls to the total.
