Padre Island or South Padre Island for a family with a 1 year old?

I have visited both of these beaches when I was a teenager, but now that we have a family we thought we would take our son sometime next year after he turns one. Does anyone have any preferences of one versus the other. I remember the beaches at South Padre being prettier and cleaner. We are probably planning to go for several days in Sept. or Oct. of next year.

Everyone I know, or have asked, prefers South Padre over Padre--what you remember as a teenager remains true today.

Thanks AnnMarie. I think South Padre would be a better choice since my husband has never been there. Have you stayed in any hotels there that you would recommend?

September is a great time to go. When our kids were little we always took our "beach vacations" once school started...less crowds and cheaper.
I would look for something with a kitchen it's easier than going out for your meals with a one year old. Are driving or flying? www.spirooms.com

Definitely SOUTH Padre Island! Check into renting a condo instead of a hotel room; with a 1 year old, you'll likely want the kitchen for preparing snacks, etc. There are LOTS of condos available! www.spionline.com has links.

ilovetulips,
I also agree with S Padre Island. There are several condos right on the beach. I would select one of those as it is a great location and with a child it is really nice to have a kitchen, laundry room, living room, etc. The comforts of home, you know?
We have stayed at the Seabreeze Resort several times. Let me know if you would like contact info or if you would like any addtl information.

memejw,
Yes I would like some info on SeaBreeze. What are the prices like in condos versus hotels at South Padre?

tulips,
Don't know the prices for hotels to compare. We've always stayed at Seabreeze. I have not been in 2 years though. I do remember that the weekend after Labor Day the prices drop almost in half. There are 2 and 3 bedroom units and the prices vary if you rent for 3 or more nights, I believe. They have a website but I've left the address at home. I can post it later. If you would like to call, these are the two numbers I have: 210-761-1541 or 1-800-541-9901.
I have a brochure that I can scan and send to you if you would like. My email is my screen name at houston .rr .com

I googled it.

http://www.seabreezebeachresort.com/

Starting at $155. Stay 3 nights, get 1 free. They've gone up a bit, I think it used to be $135.

But really, there are some other resorts right next door if you keep looking.

When I am on vacation with the kids we usually eat in a few nights in when we have a condo and I hate cooking on vacation. So a couple of weeks before our trip I cook some of our favorites and freeze them. Since you are driving you can pop them into the cooler and I have dinner prepared while on vacation.
