Pac Bell Park - Which baseline is the Giant's dugout on???

Hello, I will be purchasing Giants tickets for our trip when they go on sale on Saturday. I have searched the Giants web page and can't find this information anywhere; and the boys can't remember from watching the game last year. Does anyone know? Thanks, vacationmom

Pac Bell is bass-ackwards, the Giants sit on the 3rd base side. Jacobs Field is the same way.

Must be a Bay Area tradition then. The Oakland A's are on 3rd baseline, and when the Giants played at The Park Formerly Known as Candlestick, their dugout was 3rd base.

Seems natural to me.

I also thought that the home team was always on the 3rd base line. It's news to me that all parks aren't set up that way - LOL.

It's intended to be the opposite. It's a tradition and a rule that the home team sits on the first base side. In order to deviate, team must file with the American or National League for a waiver. I'd assume it's always accepted. In the case of these new stadiums, the designs are assymetric and the facilities seem to be on the 3rd base side. I know the reason why Cleveland sits on the 3rd base side is because there is a batting cage under the seats right below the dugout and the DH hangs out in there taking swings during the game to be sharp for his plate appearances. Not sure why the A's would want to be on that side of the Coliseum.

FYI, I'll be buying tickets saturday, too.

They are on the 3rd base side in LA as well.

At one point way far back when I was a kid I was given an explanation that it is a hemispheric thing, 3rd base side in the Northern Hemisphere, and the other way round in baseball stadiums in the Southern hemisphere. Some complicated scenario about the flow of water and the effect on the B.O. in the locker room?...

I've personally been to a game in Caracas, Venezuela. They have professional leagues there and in many other South American nations. It's also popular amongst the Japanese diaspora in Sao Paulo, Brazil and Lima, Peru. Did you know that Sao Paulo has the largest Japanese community outside of Japan?

It's also got somewhat of a cult following in Australia.

The Cincinnati Reds are on the 1st base line, unless it will be different when the new stadium is ready.

Bring warm clothes for PacBell, even if game is in summer. We were there in July and needed our long pants and sweatshirts, even for a day game.

Thanks for the tip Gail. I'll try to make sure everyone has a jacket and wears long pants (however, this is a hard sell for my husband and son - they are shorts and sweatshirt kinda guys.....Love COOL weather at a baseball game) Rest assured, me and the girls will be quite warm....... I am SO excited about coming to San Francisco!!!!! Vacationmom

I was in SF last July and one night the temp was 48 deg F, I kid you not. I logged on to the weather channel on my cell phone and SF was the coldest city in the US at that time including Anchorage, AK and Bismark, ND. If those guys can handle shorts in weather like that, more power to 'em! I was freezing!

My son (age 17) is also a short kind of guy (we live in Boston area and he has yet to wear a coat to school this year). We brought along a sweatshirt for him and he reluctantly wore it. We found it was wind-sheltered at seats, but in concourse/food area it was really cold. PS - the food is great - eat lunch or dinner at the park.

Gail and Loki, Gail - My son is 17 too. We live in the Dallas/Fort Area and my husband and son are looking forward to escaping the Texas heat next July. We WILL eat at the ballpark. This one of our favorite things to do!!! The boys (husband and son) always eat the dogs (you should see them in Chicago!!) but we girls will venture for something different.. Believe this or not, several of of our family trips have been planed around which baseball field and which team the boys want to see.... The is one of the main reasons we are coming to San Franciso. They REALLY want to see Pac Bell Park and the Giants.... Loki - I will pass on your 49 degree story to the boys, as we will be there in July also!!!! Wish me luck on getting great tickets on Saturday!!!! Vacationmom

You are not crazy abou visiting baseball parks - we try to see a game whenever we travel in US and will change date of our trip to make sure team is home that week. On same trip as SF we arranged timing so we could be in Seattle (we then drove to SF) for Mariners game.

The silliest baseball thing we have ever done is going to see our local Single A team (Lowell Spinners) play in Utica, NY on our way to Niagara Falls and Toronto.

BayArea,

When the Giants were at the "Stick', their dugout was on 1st base side, not 3rd. They made the change to 3rd when they moved to Pac Bell.

I still remember the Dodger's Tommy Lasorda having to walk all the way from the 3rd base dugout to the entrance to the visitor's locker room near the Giants bullpen when he would get thrown out of games. It was a very long walk with a musical accompaniment; "Happy Trails To You". You had to love it.

Since some people seem like they might be interested, I'll shamelessly plug my website, www.ballparkroadtrip.com

My friends an I are on a crusade to visit all the MLB parks, we write about our travels and it might help out some who are trying to plan ballpark trips. There's nothing to buy on my site, just interesting reading. Let me know what you think or if there is any other info we could add to help out the traveller...

your site is great! I've got an agenda too - so far I've only been to 8 parks, but am adding 2 more when finals are over. Nothing beats opening day, though.
