Off the Beaten Path in New Orleans

My husband and I will be in New Orleans at the end of the month for Jazz Fest. We are arriving on Thursday evening and are leaving Sunday evening. We have dinner reservations on Thursday and Saturday nights, plan to attend a party on Friday night, and will attend Jazz Fest during the day on Friday and Saturday. Had thought of brunch on Sunday but...

We are interested in doing something fun and different on Sunday. This is not our first trip and have explored the French Quarter, gambled on the riverboat, done bayou and plantation tours, as well as a walking tour of the Garden District. We are not adverse to renting a car for the day, and would love your suggestions. Please, help me plan the ultimate, off the beaten path day in or around New Orleans!

Thanks.

What are your interests?

Have you explored the antique stores on Magazine Street? Maybe a street car ride uptown, do Magazine Street, have a picnic lunch at Audubon Park under the oaks.

You could also rent a car & drive across the Causeway to St Tammany. There are several neat places there. Global Wildlife is a 900 acre animal preserve with exotic animals from all over the world- sort of like a safari park.

Pontchatula has strawberries & antique stores to enjoy. You could drive out I-10 from NO to Manchac & eat the best catfish at Middendorf's & then catch I-55 to Pontchatula. Explore there, hit Global Wildlife (if you want) & then head back to NO across the famous Causeway bridge.

Enjoy yourself whatever you decide!

Be sure to ride the BRAND NEW Canal streetcar to the mid-city cemetaries. Way cool. The new streetcar opens a whole new part of the city to visitors.

Well, that was too easy - Thanks for your help and in late September that's exactly what we'll do!

Don't know where your reservations are but Irene's is one of the best meals I've had in New Orleans.

Hi westiedogs. I've been to Irene's and enjoyed it too. This trip, we have reservations at Lilette and Peristyle. We could do Sunday brunch too, but are considering something different. Although, it is hard for me to miss a meal! Any suggestions?

There's a home, I think in Metairie, you can tour that also has lovely grounds. I've tried to find the name, but have been unsuccesful, perhaps someone else can recall it. I think the original owners may have been big in retail.

If you could spare an extra day, a trip to Lafayette would be great. The culture there is so interesting. Be sure to go to Mulatte's and dance!

I believe the home mentioned in Metairie is the Longuevue House (http://www.longuevue.com/pages/planvisit.htm). It is right on the parish line between Orleans and Jefferson. In fact, you could tour the cemetaries, enjoy City Park, take in the museum, and then head to Longuevue. They are all in the same vicinity.

I also liked the idea of riding the street car along the avenue and having a picnic at Audubon Park. Afterward you could do the zoo.

Anything on a Sunday in New Orleans will be fabulous!
