Hi,
I'm checking some NYC accomodations and found one that sound pretty good right on East 93rd St between 5th an Madison Ave. Never been to NY and I'm wondering if this is a safe and good area to stay in. Would like to visit museums, go to the ballet, etc. Can you help me? If there's possible, would like to spend less than $120 a night (2 beds needed).. going in late may.

Its actually spanish harlem. If youre in a group and city saavy you might be O.K. Otherwise you may have to look elsewhere. The hotels downtown around ground zero have lost alot of business and are offering big discounts.

In my opinion, 93rd between Fifth and Madison is not Spanish Harlem by a long shot. Lots of elite private schools in the area, restaurants and pretty expensive shopping along Madison. There was a recent thread regarding the same area so I'll pull it up for you Amy.

Amy - that other post is titled "NY Upper East Side - good area to stay?" posted by rickus. It lists the pros and cons of staying in that area as well as restaurant ideas.

I think that neighborhood is safe. It is not spanish harlem. I wouldn't venture north from there at night though. It is near the Metropolitan Museum but not the most convenient location for other sights and activities. Quick subway rides will get you to most other places. Downtown, near the WTC site would even be less convenient. Hotels along Central Park West may be more convenient to Lincoln Center and some other museums. I think staying 30th through 70th sts would be the most convenient.

Amy if you haven't found the other post on this location (sounds like the same hotel as Rickus was asking about) it's a GREAT location for museum hopping. It's also one of the most exclusive areas in NYC along 5th & Madison. Above 96th St it starts to be less desirable but you'd have no need of going above there. You can walk to the Met, Guggenheim, Whitney, Cooper Hewitt. There's a new museum (can't remember the name) at 86th & 5th. And don't miss the Frick Collection at 70th betw 5th & madison. You can take the crosstown bus to the Museum of Natural History & the Planetarium as well as Lincoln Center.
The place sounds like a brownstone that's been converted into a B&B. The rooms sound like they might be small but I'd definietly go for it with your interests. Hope this helps & hope you will post back here after your trip to let su knwo hwo it was.

Thank you all for your advices!... Pattynyc: I will look for that post you're telling me, so I can make my research wider before making a desition... but it's starting to sound good to me!

You must be nuts to think 93rd and 5th is spanish harlem. It is called Carnegie Hill and has some of the most expensive real estate in Manhattan-- Katie Couric lives in the vicinity. Certainly the farther east you go, the less luxurious the neighborhood, but you are perfectly safe anywhere below 96th st and then some.

Why not just go on Priceline or one of the other internet companies & bid on a midtown hotel? The city is not busy and you can probably name your own price.

E. 93rd is NOT Spanish (or any other kind) Harlem, it is the upper east side, but you will be far from any place you might want to explore, with the possible exception of the Cloisters.

You will fine staying at 93rd. The lexington Subway is not far and you are close to Museums such as the Met and Guggenhiem ans central park. The nieghborhood is totally safe. But know that cab rides from lower manhattan(village,soho,Chinatown,Wall Street) will be expensive.

No, 93rd St. isn't Spanish Harlem, but the Upper Eastside. Spanish Harlem starts on 96th St. You'll be fine. If you want some good cuchifrito, however, walk a few blocks north.
