Planning a trip with a friend, her daughter and my daughter to NYC. We need a room with 2 queens preferably. Does anyone have any comments about either/both of these hotels? We want to stay in the $300 range and these both fit the bill.

The Affinia 50 would be MILES better. It's an all suite hotel so pretty much whatever size room you opt for (ie studio or one bedroom) you'll have some seating space and a kitchen. The rooms at the Park South are particularly small and don't offer any extra space.

Affinia 50 is part of the Affinia.com group that has 7 all suite hotels, any of which would be fine for you. The Affinia 50 is a great location for shopping. There are a few other all suite hotels near it including the Benjamin (another Affinia hotel), the Kimberly and the San Carlos. The San Carlos is a bit newer and fresher furnishings and I hear there are some 1 bedroom suites with 2 full bathrooms which might come in handy for a group of 4 women.

Make sure to doublecheck prices on whatever hotel you chose b/w quikbook.com and the hotels' own website to get the best price.

I agree with mclaurie. I've stayed at The Park South many times and while it is a gorgeous little boutique hotel in a great location with fantastic amenities, the rooms are tiny.

While the Affina 50 isn't as nice, it has so much more room.

There is no way I would stay four women to a room at The Park South. No way unless I didn't care to keep the friendship.

There will not be room in the room or bathroom for all of your things.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking that Affinia 50 may be better choice. The girls are 9 and 10 years old, so they don't take up that much bathroom time, etc. but we still want some wiggle room.

For the record, I loved the Blakely last time I went to NYC. It is too pricey for October for this trip, but it would have been perfect! The rooms are $425 there for my dates.

I had been considering the Park South for a stay in April, and ended up elsewhere - but my neighbor stayed there a few weeks ago and she thought the hotel clean and lovely, but that the rooms were extremely small as someone mentioned, too small for she and her husband - but he stayed there a few days later on a business trip and said it was excellent for that - just a place to crash at the end of business days - basically echo-ing what GoT said above.

I stayed at the Park South last year and found it great - but I was on my own and the rooms were TINY !!!! And there was no proper closet to hang clothes.

Check deals at Travelzoo.com. They often have great deals. I found rooms at the Affinia Manhattan for $159 a night. Btw, does anyone have any comments on this hotel? Thanks

If you read McLaurie's post above, she comments positively on the Affinia, and often recommends them and her reviews/opinions are excellent.

Thanks for the compliment, escargot. Yes, the Affinia's are all good and $159 is a great rate (but for what size room?). I don't like the location of the Affinia Manhattan vs. the other Affinia's and it's not the most up to date furniture, but it's certainly a decent place to stay.

Mclaurie, the room is for a studio with two double beds, as I am traveling with my daughters ages 20 and 13. From the map it looks like it's a bit south from mid-town, but how is it area for walking up to mid-town? Or are we going to have to use a lot of cabs from that hotel? Thanks for all your advice!

Midtown "officially" starts at 34 st. and the Affinia is on 31 st. so it's really IN midtown. That area is near Penn Station, Madison Square Garden and is at the south end of the garment center. You're about 10 blocks south of the theater district/Times Square which is certainly walkable and very close to Macy's and the Empire State building. Most tourists find the location very convenient. Locals think of it as very commercial and a bit of a wasteland for dining. (although 32 st is known as little Korean with a lot of K. restaurants). I guess it really comes down to what the other hotel options/prices are.
