NY for the first time, suggestions
My 18 year old daughter and her friend are planning to go to NY in June for 5 days, Things they should know and do to be safe and have a great time. Thank you in advance for all your advice.

Are they both 18?
Many hotels will not allow 18 year olds to check in and it isn't uncommon that either both guests be over 21 or one be over 25. I would check that first.
That said, NYC is one of the safest big cities in the world. They will be fine.

They should read a couple of guidebooks, make some specific plans and then come here themselves for more info.
It's true they may well have trouble getting a hotel that will let them stay (by the way, what's their budget?) and even if they are allowed to stay the hotel may put a large hold on their credit card to offset possible damage. So they need to be sure they have at least one high limit credit card with them (preferaly AMEX since there's no limit).
(They might want to consider staying in a hostel - which would solve the age issue - plus save them a lot of money they could spend on shows, shopping etc.)
As far as safety is concerned if they are sensible they should have no problems. They won;t be allowed in bars or clubs - and hopefully won;t find a way to drink too much.
They just need to be organized, assertive, sure of themselves - and not look like confused rabbits (sure to attract pickpockets etc).
They should also organize to get subway and bus maps in advance to familiarize themselves with the transport system. And check out the web sites of New York Magazine and Time Out New York - esp to get a idea not only of what to do, but also of prices in New York.

Thank you for your help,
They are both 18, don't drink, and both are smart. They're more interested in seeing city's highlights,
Empire State Building, Central Park, Statue of Liberty, and see a play and so forth, their budget will probably be $1500-$2,000 each.

Not drinking and being smart are great - but it won't get them into a hotel if the hotel has a policy not to rent to people their age. Many do. So do take the advice to either check carefully on this or stay at a hostel. They wouldn't want to end up in NYC with no place to stay and have to waste precious vacation time hunting for accomodations that will work at the last minute!
