Nice town to sleep/dine in near I-95 between Baltimore and DC

I am driving from NYC to Florida over 3 or 4 days and on my first night I would like to sleep in a comfortable and clean B&B or small hotel in a nice town with good restaurants.
I am trying to avoid the busy DC area. As I plan to stay on I-95 all the way to Florida, I prefer something not too far from it.
I cannot drive more than 5 h a day.
Thanks for any suggestion.
Maria

What about Catonsville MD...that'll put you in between the two cities.

If you leave New York around 10am, you should be able to get beyond Washington DC by 3pm or so, that way you'll have the worst traffic behind you next morning . So I'd say keep going well past Baltimore, maybe something like The Kenmore Inn in downtown Fredericksburg.

Sorry for the double post....

I think you can easily make it past DC too.

Maybe here: http://www.theschoolerhouse.com/ in Fredericksburg

Great to know that I can drive past DC in one day, that will make things actually easier as I'm trying to spend one night in Charleston, SC as well.
The Fredericksburg Inn looks lovely, I will check it out (hope they have a garage).

Thank you so much, you guys are quick!!

I think a garage is highly unlikely.

DW and I stayed at the Extended Stay America near the Gateway Mall in Columbia, MD. It was nice to have a full kitchen, free wifi, couch and a big HDTV.
After our DD's graduation we went out to the Cheesecake Factory.
There are plenty of good restaurants in the Columbia area.
For a diner, I like the Laurel Diner in Laurel (great milkshakes).
