Niagara-on-the Lake, Ontario?

I'm trying to find some info on the town, such as where to stay for a night or two and maybe some sights and things to do. I've heard that they have some good bike trails along the river so we're taking our bikes along. Good idea? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

HI

I live about an hour away from Niagara on the Lake. It's a lovely place. There's a bike path that goes from it to Niagara Falls. If you can't bike it you can drive and see the Falls.

The Shaw Festival is on until Oct. Lots of wineries in the area-you can take tours.

There are a few really nice (expensive) hotels like the Prince of Wales, Queens Landing and the Pillar and Post. Some B&Bs in the area too.

Here's the number for the Chamber of Commerce. They can probably send you lots of info. 905-468-4263

I've been to Niagara-on-the-Lake several times and really enjoy visiting there. It is a quaint little town. I stayed at the Post and Pillar and it was fantastic. I ate at The Buttery restaurant and had so much fun I've returned on 3 more visits. It is a period themed restaurant with wench's serving you and no silverware (you have to eat with your fingers). They play a lot of jokes on the patrons but it's all in fun and totally enjoyable. You have to make reservations way in advance.

Thanks to both of you for your info. You are right, the town is great and we had a very good time. We drove from Erie, PA into New York State and crossed into Canada at the "Peace Bridge" in Buffalo. From there, we took the scenic route from Fort Erie, Ontario along the Niagara River north to Niagara Falls, Queenston and into Niagara-on-the-lake. It was a beautiful drive. We went to one B&B which was full, but called another right around the corner who had two available rooms. The place was lovely and the owners were very friendly. Cost was only $63.00 (US) including breakfast for the two of us. We parked our truck and took our two bikes which we brought along and visited the small, but lovely town. The weather was great and many people were out, but not crowded. We rode over to the "Oden Inn" along the river and locked up our bikes out back, passing by well-dressed patrons out for dinner before the theater. we went into the bar (same kitchen, different menu as the restaurant) and ordered the fish & chips, local wine (for my wife) and two Sleeman's (for myself) which were very good. Upon leaving, it's customery to merely state what you've ordered to the bartender and he charges accordingly. It's the "honor system". We went over to the main park and locked up our bikes again for a ride on a horse drawn carriage. "Jeff", the driver took us on a very good tour telling us about the history of the town, nearby Fort George, the house and gazebo from the movie "The Dead Zone" and the ghosts of the "Angel Inn". It was the perfect evening. We then took a short bicycle ride along the bike path and then back to the place we were staying for the night. For breakfast, we were treated to an "apple puff", fruit, cereal, coffee cake, muffins and beverages as we discussed the area with our hosts. We took a short jaunt (about one mile) to the "Red Barn" antique store and then back into town. We visited nearly every one of the little shops and settled for lunch at the Angel Inn. The building is quite old (haunted?, one of the oldest pubs in N. America). The chicken was great and the ambiance of the place was very friendly and "old world". As we left the town, we headed over to Fort George and Navy Hall. We spent the next two or three hours there as it is very interesting and they are people working there in clothing of that era (War of 1812) and can show you how things were done and why. There was a British "soldier" instructing "students" on muskets. At the end of the day, we returned home via the "faster route", from Queenston across to New York and into Buffalo along I-90 back to Erie. It was such a good "getaway" that I'm sure we'll return and maybe this summer take in the theater during the "Shaw Festival". If you have a chance, take the trip.

Dear Lee & Wife: <smile>

I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Living "'round the orner", geographically speaking, it's always nice to hear when people have enjoyed my part of the world.

My main reason for posting is to thank you for letting everyone know how it turned out. Touring through this forum, I've read a lot of "please help w/ info" requests but not too many "here's how it turned out" ones. So good for you for taking the time!

Regards
J.

Hi! Just wanted to say that while you're in Niagara on the Lake, take a jaunt over to Youngstown, NY, and tour Old Fort Niagara. If you like history, you will love the Fort. It's in perfect condition, goes back to the Revolution, and the view of Niagara River and Lake Ontario is breathtaking (can see Toronto on a clear day). Enjoy your trip!
