Niagara Falls-Canadian side
My wife and I are planning to go to Niagara on the Canadian side in early Aug. Any suggestions for good Italian restaurants in the Lundy Lane area? Any other suggestions on what to do while we are there? It has been over 45 years since I've been there and my bride has never been there. Thanks

Are you sure you want to stay on the Canadian side? There's a drastic difference in environment between the American and Canadian side (no offense to Canadians!!) It's just that the American side is relatively quiet and peaceful, while the Canadian side has a "Las Vegas" feel and look to it. Lots of cheesy places. If you want lights, action, rock clubs and noise, then you'll like it. The VIEW OF THE FALLS is better from the Canadian side, but when I was there I couldn't wait to get back to my quiet hotel room on the American side each night. I guess if you're staying far enough away from the falls, it might not be a problem. Definitely do the tour down the side of the falls on either side, also the boat tour. Go to the top of Skylon Tower on the Canadian side. I was there 3 years ago and I can't recall any particularly good restaurant, but I'm sure they're there.

I agree that there is a vast difference between the US and Canadian sides. So this won't be construed as some kind of nationalistic thing, I am from the US. However I believe that the Canadian side of the falls is much nicer. I will admit that I eat on the NY side because, there is a great Italian restaurant in Niagra Falls NY. However, the Canadian side is much cleaner and nicer. This information is somewhat dated so they could have cleaned up the US side.

No, they haven't cleaned up the US side...I would suggest staying a little outside of NF (Canadian side) in a really quaint little town called Niagara-on-the-Lake (that's if you don't want the all the hustle & bustle) The American side is quite a dive, unfortunately, and not as safe. (I live quite close to Niagara Falls,NY)

I live in Niagara Falls Ontario. I would highly recommend stay here as opposed to Niagara Falls New York. Although there are many things to do here with the casnio, museums, etc., there are also many out of the way cheap or free attactions. I would recommend walking the Niagara Gorge, the butterfly conseratory, the Greenhouses, and the senic tunnells under the falls. Niagara on the lake is very expensive and crowded but also very beauiful and historical.
As for restuarants, the Ramanda overlooking the falls has a great buffet, (even the locals eat there), for Itailian the Casa-doro, and seafood the Fine Kettle of Fish,,,,,
that should keep you going while here, enjoy your stay,,,,,
there is a great hotel at www.falllsviewhotels.com you can check out.

I was there many years ago, definitely the Canadian side is much much nicer. I did not find the US side appealing at all. I have told people over and over to go to the Canadian sides. Lots of nice flowers planted there. There's more view on the Canadian side also. I think you will find the atmosphere romantic even if you find a crowd of people there. Enjoy!

Stay on the Canadian side, but take an afternoon and visit Old Fort Niagara on the American side - about a 20 minute ride from the falls in Youngstown, New York. It is a BEAUTIFUL fort built around the time of the French and Indian war. Used during the Revolution and the War of 1812. It sits at the mouth of the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. Both sides are pretty tacky. Just stay away from the commerical side streets and keep your eyes on the falls!
We've found ourselves in NF several times recently and now choose to stay at the Skyline Foxhead. The Brock is more historic... but it's further back from the falls and doesn't have balconies. The hotel is blah modern and overrun [or was then] with Asian tourists, but the rooms have balconies where you can sit with a drink and HEAR the falls as well as see them. [And they ARE loud!]
We just ignore the ticky-tack. We also don't expect to eat well in NF. We're there to see the falls... so just wander out of the Foxhead towards the area near the falls, which is quite nicely done!
Don't miss The Maid of the Mist and [accessible from the US side I think] The Cave of the Winds. Otherwise kick back, enjoy the falls, day or night and marvel.
